I’ve been loving seeing everyone’s #MeetTheVHSCollector posts, so I thought I’d join! Hi! I’m Adrienne. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, but I consider Seattle home as I’ve lived here for over a decade. I’m a writer, editor, and social media manager for @mopopseattle which features exhibitions on all sorts of pop culture, including horror film! If you follow me on here you already know that I collect horror paperbacks in addition to VHS. I love discovering forgotten gems in the genre, both on the page and on screen. Although I will say, writing styles have changed over the decades and some of the books I read pain the editor side of my brain. Good thing I have a healthy addiction to — I don’t want to say “bad,” so let’s say — unusual art. The horror community on IG is awesome. I’ve loved meeting each and every one of you on here. Working in social media, I’ve seen a lot of negative corners of the internet, but the IG horror community is such a positive, supportive place, and I’m happy to be a part of it with you! Unicorn Store is Brie Larson's directorial debut, playing currently on everyone's favourite streaming service. It centres around Kit, a failing art student who has lost her sense of self and is ready to become a dressed-like-an-80's-librarian adult in a stuffy office job. That is until she gets invited to The Store; a place which claims to sell exactly what you need. Which in Kit's case is a unicorn (obvs). . I had heard Samuel L was in this and was excited to see how round two of the Larson and Jackson teamup would play out (the first round being Captain Marvel - just on the teeny tiny chance someone reading this was unaware). Unfortunately their chemistry is significantly less effective here. While I give full marks for SL Jack's peach suit and tinsled-fro (which was giving me Mr. Glass vibes, anyone else?) unfortunately I wasn't feeling his character at all. Even Larson was a bit flat for me here, and I hated that she *SPOILER ALERT* had to have a man at the end to help her on her path to discovery. Or as a reward for it. Either are gross. . The message is a good one, but is also delivered so smack in your face you'd be knocked out by it if you weren't looking. Also as a human-magpie I did love just how much tinsel and glitter was in this film, but can someone explain to me how she got So. Much. Paint. on her face every time she made something!!! Was she using her forehead as mixing tray?!?! . From a directing standpoint Unicorn Store isn't badly made, but it isn't great either. I didn't mind the film overall, but one watch is enough for me. Still a better time than Hairspray: Live! which I regrettably also watch today. . Ok, I have a few thoughts about the Golden Globes. I considered making a video but it's a bit tricky here in a large noisy dorm with bad wifi... So Instagram it is! Not gonna comment on every catergory, just the ones that kinda jumped out for me. Here goes! I'm happy Rami Malek won for Best Actor Drama as he was amazing, but would have also been happy with Bradley Cooper. People raved about Lady Gaga's performance in A Star Is Born but B.Coops absolutely rocked it IMO. Not happy Bohemian Rhapsody won for best drama. That's a mess. Basically any of the other 4 nominated films would have been more deserved. I haven't seen If Beale Street Could Talk but have heard great things. But my vote would have been A Star Is Born (or Blackkklansman would also be fine). Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy... I'm so, so, so sad (and concerned and confused) to say this but... I haven't seen a single one of the nominated films How How is that possible Am I broken Best Motion Picture Animated - what a great freaking list! Animated films owned it this year and I am SO PUMPED to see Spider-Man take it out. That movie was perfection. Best Actress Comedy or Musical - I love Olivia Coleman and Yorgos Lanthimos is a genius so a winning combo I'm sure (also haven't seen The Favourite yet... but I will! Mark my words!) Best Actor Comedy or Musical - How funny is Christian Bale's real accent though. Love it. Best Actor Any Motion Picture - Stoked to see my main man Timothee Chalamet get nominated. He was the best thing about that movie. Best TV Series Comedy - What even is The Kominsky Method Based on my zero knowledge of it my vote would have been for Kidding. It's so brilliant! Or The Good Place would have been fine too. . That's all I got friends! What are your thoughts on the winners/nominations? Let me know below!
