The rain last night was very welcome but unfortunately the heavy showers stayed offshore and the soil is pretty dry just a few inches down. That said, I’m busy succession planting today. This fuzzy little guy is our first pumpkin! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Well, I say ‘our’ first pumpkin but really I’m growing them for a friend who is getting married in October ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m really hoping for a few large fruits from this plant so @linzikurt can display them proudly on her big day!

I’ve got fine-leaved Greek basil planted through my garden beds but I also wanted to pop one in a pot and put it in the polytunnel. It’s thriving in the sheltered space and has doubled in size in just 10 days! This is Aristotle, you may remember this variety from an earlier post. And while the leaves are tiny, the flavour is BIG. I’ve been sprinkling the leaves on pizza, pastas and pretty much everything else I’ve been cooking. Basil tip - many garden centres offer fresh basil transplants throughout summer. Succession planting basil several times is the best way to ensure a non-stop crop of high-quality leaves. Yum!! I’m not actually a big flower girl (I know right ) because I generally prefer to eat my plants. But when I first discovered the Instagram gardening community there was ONE plant that everyone seemed to be talking about though...the Dahlia. I’d never grown one...I was just far more interested in carrots. This year however, through spending far too much time around plants generally, I have found a whole new love for many flowers...including the Dahlia...and it turns out Dahlias are also edible #growingfood - Ps I’m blaming you both @thegoodlifeainteasy & @my_little_allotment for this new found Dahlia love btw

I pruned back and relocated all of my remaining Eggplants today. I had a few that I had left on the plants to save seeds from. As I was harvesting them, I noticed this one. It had split open and the seeds inside had started to germinate. A pretty amazing sight - nature is just incredible

Did you know that you can get secondary harvests from your single heading broccoli? After you harvest the main head, leave the plant and it will start producing smaller side shoots. If you need the space and need to remove the plant, don’t forget you can eat the leaves and much of the stem. Waste not, want not
