I'm sharing this week's book suggestions in a post instead of an IGTV episode.⠀ ⠀ Have you read the Wrinkle in Time books with your kids? There are actually five books in this series, sometimes called the Time Quintet. We only own the three pictured here. The books are written by Madeline L'Engle. ⠀ ⠀ If you only know the books based on the recent movie, you don't really know the books. ⠀ ⠀ The movie gets the basic plot right. Meg, a young girl who has never really fit in, goes to rescue her father held prisoner on a distant planet. She's accompanied by her friend Calvin and her baby brother Charles Wallace who has some unique abilities. ⠀ ⠀ As with many movie adaptations of any books with spiritual elements, however, the movie is very changed from the book. ⠀ ⠀ L'Engle was a professing Christian. And, although some Evangelical Christians have questioned this over the years, her books are full of great things to discuss-whether you totally agree with her or not. ⠀ ⠀ I've read the books aloud with my kids because I think that offers the best way to discuss a book. I stop at passages that might come across as different than our personal theology and we talk about it. We've had some great conversations over A Wrinkle in Time. ⠀ ⠀ I highly recommend these for upper elementary and middle grade readers. They have interesting plots. Madeline L'Engle is an excellent story teller. Ashlyne-one of my ninth graders-used Where the Brook and River Meet for her curriculum spine this year. It's a unit study curriculum based on Anne of Green Gables. ⠀ ⠀ I love anything literature-based, and most of my kids prefer that as well. This one was great because it dived into Victorian history, art, music, and literature as well. ⠀ ⠀ Ashlyne also took cooking as an elective this year. So when I saw this book the other day on a post from @littleblueschoolroom3 I knew we needed it. I was able to get it from Thrift Books used. ⠀ ⠀ It's got some great recipes that Anne either makes in the books or that is very similar to what she makes. I also love that it has a little blurb about where in the book the recipe is mentioned. Some are from further books in the series-which may inspire Ashlyne to continue on and read them all. I'm looking forward to some yummy cooking this summer! Y'all, I have a confession. I am officially resorting to reading picture books to the dog. ⠀ ⠀ I was so super excited to find a copy of this from Thrift Books. Here's a story that will tell my age. ⠀ ⠀ One of my all-time favorite movies is Labyrinth. If you've never seen it, the plot is about a girl whose baby brother is taken by the goblin king-played by David Bowie. The girl has to enter a labyrinth to find him. ⠀ ⠀ So last week I was reading an email from one of the children's books sites I like to watch. The book suggestions were all "dark" stories for little kids-picture books. And one of them was this one. ⠀ ⠀ I was fascinated because (1) it's by Maurice Sendak -one of my favorites! and (2) the plot is about a little girl whose baby sister is taken by the goblins. I had to find this book!⠀ ⠀ A quick search located for me a copy from Thrift Books-which is good because new versions were pricey! I got it today, read it to the dog-who wasn't impressed-and love it!!⠀ ⠀ The story is very good. Yes, there are goblins who steal the baby away, but it's not made out to be scary-only an adventure. And-spoiler alert-it all comes right in the end. ⠀ ⠀ I could write a lengthy blog post about why I'm okay with reading these "darker" books to kids. But in this post I'll just say-I think it can be a great way to teach kids that the world can be a little scary. But that good can win over evil. ⠀ ⠀ And I think this book is a great one to share with the kids.
