Just a tiny button checking out my ring . I took this picture while I was attempting to write my senior thesis and it took me significantly longer with this little guy hanging around ‍♂️. Also, out of 30 eggs shipped to me, only 8 seemed to have made it to lockdown for the “mystery” birds I’m hatching next. The seller shipped me a dozen more since so a lot were infertile, but I’d be happy if I can get 10 to hatch! They have about 3-4 more days in the incubator, and just in time too because I’m almost done with their little enclosure! Stay tuned

This is the guy I’ll be using over the porcelain D’uccles I posted yesterday . I couldn’t find a porcelain roo as of yet, so all the offspring will come out this guy’s color (Mille fleur), but will be split for the lavender gene. Once you cross those offspring together you’ll get 25% porcelain, 50% splits, and 25% Mille fleurs . Excited to finally have some bantams on the farm, I forgot how hilarious their tiny crows are

One thing I love so much about raising different breeds and species of birds is the different egg color and shapes! The left hand side was laid by my black copper marans and olive eggers, middle (from top to bottom) is coturnix quail, button quail, and the mystery eggs that I’m hatching . The right are from my easter egger pen, with a few tan layers mixed in! The new bantam breed should be here either today or early tomorrow! I’ll be posting a YouTube video on them and the new enclosure I built for when the “mystery birds” hatch in 10 days

So I named this little peanut Eva and she was the only button I have been able to catch so far since they’ve escaped (this was when she was newly hatched) ‍♂️. I see them running across the field in the morning and I swear they’re taunting me because they know I’m too slow to catch them . Also, the new bantam breed that I ordered from a breeder never came today like they were scheduled.. and the tracking info is of course not updated . Praying these four birds come tomorrow!

Got a call at 6:30am this morning (a bit early ), and the post office guy said my birds were finally here! Thankfully all four were alive and had lots of food left in their boxes . I bought a quad of d’uccles from a breeder with show quality stock, 3 porcelain d’uccle females (2 just started laying) and 1 Mille fleur cockerel! I had this breed 6-7 years back and have always wanted them again since they’re such a docile and friendly breed . I’m going to stick 2-3 dozen eggs in the incubator for myself and then this bantam breed will be available in September if anyone is interested in some hatching eggs!

Still one of my favorite pictures of the first time I hatched button quail and didn’t realize just how small these guys were . I was petrified of accidentally squishing it so I held it so lightly to take the picture, and that’s when I learned they were also lightening fast . Last weekend I went to feed the buttons in the morning and realized that none were in the enclosure... I found the smallest hole in the siding and didn’t think it was possible for them to squeeze out of it, but I guess they managed ‍♂️. Now I’m hearing tons of little quail crows in the woods and haven’t been able to find or caught one . I spent this entire week rebuilding the enclosure to ensure none ever get out again. Hoping I can at least caught a few to start my flock over

Some of you may remember the greater prairie chicken I posted a couple months back (aka the “rabbit-chicken” ), well it looks like I may or may not be receiving a pair/trio of them come fall if all goes my way! The US fish and wildlife service is going to get back to me tomorrow to see if I need a permit or license to keep/breed them, if I do then hopefully I can get the application going to get approved! I’m beyond excited about this if it actually happens! Just need to work on a new enclosure now just in case . I’ll keep you guys updated on the process (Thanks Steve for letting me use your video!)
