Jeri Ward was only 30 years old when she had a life-altering clot-provoked stroke. She had a headache for five consecutive days with no relief. One evening, she was sitting on the couch with her husband, when she felt a loud pop and heard a fizzing sound in her head, similar to firecracker. It was followed by extreme dizziness and blurry vision. She was unable to move or speak for several seconds, and once she did, her words made on sense: Jeri was terrified. She got to the hospital ten minutes later and was diagnosed with blood clots in the frontal lobe of her brain. Doctors told her ten minutes longer may have been too late. . During dinner with a family friend the evening before she passed away due to a massive pulmonary embolism, Alexandra Rowan did mention that she was “feeling tired,” but she did not suggest that she was experiencing any of the signs or symptoms of a blood clot in her lung. While about one-third of people will not experience the most common signs or symptoms of a blood clot, many other people do experience symptoms but may be unaware of what they mean or indicate. Recognition of blood clot signs and symptoms can be life-saving. During Women’s Health Month, please take a few minutes to watch and share the important information about blood clot signs and symptoms: More info to share in our profile link. . . . . #stoptheclot #womenandbloodclots #communityconnection #sharetostoptheclot #togetherwecan #bloodclots #bloodclot #DVT #deepveinthrombosis #PE #pulmonaryembolism #knowyourrisk #knowthesigns #bloodclotrisk #knowmore #sharemore #women #woman #womenshealth #birthcontrol #thepill #contraception #pregnancy #childbirth #menopause #womanshealthmonth

In a matter of minutes, Jeri went from a full-time social worker, advocate, and an avid volunteer, to a 30-year-old who did not remember what letters were. In a matter of months, and after lots of practice with her husband, she regained her ability to read, write, and speak so that she can share her story today. After her clot-provoked stroke, Jeri went through numerous surgeries to remove blood clots from her brain and her carotid artery. At first, her doctors were unsure if she would ever speak again. Jeri’s heart was broken when her husband told her he loved her, and she could not respond. In that moment, she resolved that she would speak again. Jeri used letter flash cards and pre-school practice workbooks to re-learn the alphabet. She went from a wheelchair, to standing, to a walker as she re-gained mobility. After Jeri was released from the hospital, she attended speech and occupational therapy five days a week, with more practice at home, until she regained her ability to speak and write. . Until six months ago, Jeri Ward had no idea what the signs and symptoms of stroke were, or that one could happen to her at just 30 years old and the picture of perfect health. Yet, sitting on the couch laughing with her husband one night, her speech became jumbled. When it didn’t resolve, Jeri was scared, and she soon found out she was suffering from a massive stroke due to two blood clots that dislodged from her carotid artery in her neck to the lower part of the left frontal lobe of her brain. We’re proud to partner with Jeri this May in recognition of Stroke Awareness Month to share her story and life-saving information about clot-provoked stroke. Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) is caused by chronic blood clots in the lungs that become scar-like tissue blocking or narrowing the pulmonary arteries. CTEPH can be a cause of persistent shortness of breath that is otherwise unexplained. 1 in 25 of people who suffer pulmonary embolism each year could develop CTEPH. A pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) procedure is typically performed to remove the clots that form in the lungs.
