New pond project update.....still a work in progress. Water level is about 6 feet deep currently. Twelve inch (barn)building/storm runoff pipe not yet connected from barn area to the pond. Once this is connected, the water level on the pond will rise dramatically. So far, about 20,000 tons of dirt have been removed in the making of this pond. The best top soil has been saved for reintroduction onto the farm. Black shale (which is prevalent here under the soil because we are elevation wise, above the river) has been removed to our back country area. Hard to see how steep the walls are in this photo, but as it progresses, the water level will rise, and the perimeter will become gentler. It has taken about 5 weeks of constant excavating and careful digging to get to this point. Bravo to a GREAT team of professional excavators and architects who made this happen! The overflow from this soon to be, lovely pond, will flow into our larger, backyard pond, which in turn, flows into the Mohawk River. Environmentally simpatico, as they say! We have had so much rain this month! ☔️ By this time last year, we already had the stock tank pool filled (we flip it upside down for winter storage after we clean it out at the end of the season. But you won’t hear this desert girl complaining about the extra moisture! The hot, dry season will be here soon enough. Last week we said goodbye to our little Mabel She was the prettiest little calf, so sweet, always gave kisses with her rough tongue, and loved running around the pasture with her brother. It was a hard decision to make, but in the end I feel really good about it being the best decision. Things are quieter around the barnyard (literally! she had the loudest moo!), and honestly a lot easier too. I'm weaning Frankie, and there's no more wrangling two strong calves at milking time. We found a great home for Mabel, and after selling both Lucy (back in January) and Mabel, I've made back more than I bought my two original cows for, and we still have Maudie and Frankie Bea sobbed as we waved goodbye to the livestock trailer bringing Mabel to her new home, but she was comforted to know that Maudie will have another calf next year, and hopefully it's another heifer calf, sweet and lovely like our Mabel

I have not discussed food or eating as it relates to health + wellness in my feed for a very long time, and that’s intentional. I have since come to deeply understand that everyone’s needs, bodies, lifestyles, goals and preferences are different — and without hierarchy. Who am I to give advice or tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t eat? But I will say this: For myself, the healthiest approach seems to be quality, consistency and simplicity: Eating the highest quality food I can get my hands on (which is why we grow so much of what we eat), eating three meals a day — breakfast, lunch and supper — preferably homemade, preferably sitting down, and for heaven’s sake, not overthinking the whole process. In my world, coffee is an absolute must, as is the occasional glass of good wine. Sometimes I want a kale salad; sometimes I want a piece of pie. I have learned to completely relax around food and it has changed my life in the best possible way. Throwing away all the rules and restrictions, trusting my intuition and just doing whatever feels right in the moment has been such a cathartic revelation for me. I’ve woken up to the realization that food is one of the precious few pleasures granted to us as human beings and it’s meant to be enjoyed wholeheartedly. We are not put on this earth to suffer. And I no longer see the point in denying life’s simple joys if it can be helped. To me, that feels rather silly and self-deprecating. And that’s all I have to say about that! Now to drink this coffee and drain the ricotta...

Just another day on the farm! Crazy hippie lady here, bathing her chicken. Drogon is feeling much better, but she smelled so bad after being sick that I had to bathe her stinky, fluffy butt before she went back out to the coop. She did not care for the bath, but she loved the blow dry! ****if you are curious, I did throw away the toothbrush that was by the sink and I got a new one. ‍♀️I had set up the other bathroom for all of this, but the electricity was out.
