Spring is officially less than 2 weeks away! Who’s dreaming of gardening?! Anyone building new raised beds? Questions have been popping up, so let’s recap FAQs about our beds, soil, & nutrients. For Throwback Thursday, it was fun DIGGING up these old photos of past bed building projects!
.
What are our beds made of? We use heart redwood, using 2x6”s with 4x4” corners. Cedar is a great choice too. We have a YouTube video that shows how we build beds!
.
What do you fill your beds with? Soil health and quality is EVERYTHING when it comes to a bountiful garden, so we don’t mess around here! Our target recipe is 40% soil, 40% compost, & 20% aeration.
.
For the soil portion: If we have several really deep, big beds to fill at once, we buy some bulk organic soil + compost from a local landscape company. But we don’t rely just on that, since it doesn’t usually seem the highest quality or preferred texture. It is added as “filler” at the bottom of very deep beds (like 2-foot deep ones) up to about 1/4 full. Then for the rest of the volume, or when we’re filling a couple smaller beds at a time, we go for high-quality organic bagged raised bed soil blends like Gardner & Bloome or @kellogggarden soils. You can see by the photos that they’ve truly been a staple in our garden for years!
.
For compost: We try to use as much homemade compost & worm castings as possible. Unfortunately, we don’t ever have enough for big projects, so we also add quality organic bagged compost and soil conditioner too.
.
For aeration: We mix in some 3/8” volcanic rock. It increases moisture retention, drainage, + surface area for beneficial microbes to live and thrive on. If you can’t find volcanic rock, pumice or perlite can be used.
.
Yep, our beds are 100% full of all this good stuff, no other “fillers” at the bottom. Roots love deep soil! Sprinkled in, we add organic amendments like alfalfa, kelp, and neem meals twice a year – follow the directions on the box. Every couple of months, we water w/ aerated compost tea. The longer you have your garden, the more important it is to amend, since the soil will become depleted as plants use up nutrients to GROW!

Good morning! It's been nice and rainy here the past few days, with more to come this week. That means we are filling up our rain tanks - which total 1200 gallons now! In case you missed the stories, I saved a highlight on our rain capture set up

Time to get to work in the front yard! Yesterday we planted out the first of the tomatoes of 2019 - a couple in the new bed on the left - along with a pepper, some basil and flowers. I added Stories about how we planted the tomatoes, if you're interested! Today we need to clear the big bed on the right, amend it, and plant more tomatoes, squash, and peppers. The bok choy that is there has long since bolted, and the kale is on it's way now too. We also plan to experiment with a new irrigation set-up for some of the beds - and I'll write a post on that soon! Enjoy your Saturday out there!
Anyone experienced tiny sleepy bears in their garden?

Turn your compost into a windowsill edible garden. In an all-new blog post I’m sharing how to regrow vegetable scraps. Part science project and part salad inspo; either way, it promotes food sustainability and zero waste in the kitchen. Find the tutorial here and linked in Stories http://www.simplebites.net/how-to-regrow-vegetable-scraps/
