Long time since I have posted anything vintage, we are refurnishing our seter on a shoestring, budget, furnishing it for 16-20 guests. Wuhaa, what a week This years #fashionrevolutionweek is over, but I’m so ready to continue 52 weeks a year with my take on a green closet I will try not to buy new synthetic textiles at all ( Did you know that they consist of up to 60 % plastic?!) Today is #worldenvironmentday and I would like to say something about sustainable sewing. ✂️ . Sewing isn’t necessarily environmentally friendly in itself, as we still buy materials for our projects. However, it can be a great tool to learn to appreciate how much work that is behind every garment and to built a closer relationship with each piece of clothing. Every step of the process at the factory is done by a human, often with poor working conditions, and being mindful of that can make us think twice about how much we need and for which price. . When it comes to fabrics, choosing the right one can also have a big impact. Buying used materials is the most obvious choice. Curtains, bedsheets, tablecloths and outdated garments can become great new pieces of clothing. ♻️ If you don’t feel confident in sewing from scratch, redesigning and refashioning old clothes is a great and safe way to start practising your sewing skills. ✂️ . New materials are difficult. Synthetics like acrylic, polyester and polyamid/nylon is everywhere, and it can sometimes be hard to recognise the difference between the materials, as synthetics are getting really good at replicating natural fibres. These fabrics are made from plastic, and we should basically try to avoid plastic to be able to fix our planet. Yes, many of them are recycled, but they still shed micro plastics into the water when they are being washed. Natural materials aren’t always innocent either. Chemicals from colouring and fabric treatment are being spilt into nature and polluting the water around the factories. It’s not easy, when you start to think about it.‍♀️ . If you need a new fabric, a good place to start is by looking for “deadstock” fabrics. That means leftover fabrics from fashion prodution. These fabrics used to be thrown away, but are now being sold to fabric shops in stead (yay!). . Choosing natural materials like linen, wool, silk, ramie (nettle), lyocell/tencel (sustainable versions of viscose, based on cellulose-fibers from trees) is also great options, but try to look for Eco-cert or similar certification. . Let’s be aware consumers and try to help this planet out
