Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay. This field school excavates soil layers dating to 45,000 years ago with the aim to study how people lived in the desert during a period of environmental flux. (link in bio)⠀ .⠀ Our field school at Spitzkloof in South Africa is part of a larger comparative project, Adaptations to Marginal Environments in the Middle Stone Age (AMEMSA), which aims to understand how some of the world’s earliest fully modern human societies adapted to challenging African environments. At this site there are 15 large truncated pyramids, some with massive entry ramps up to 300 meters in length. In other less peaceful news, sometimes in conversations I hear the damndest things. Shut up, old climbers!! I know, I know…it’s not just old climbers, and it’s not all of them. But damn. “You should have seen Yosemite when it was really something…I used to sit out on that point surrounded by only silence…now it’s ruined.” Other older adventurers chime in. “That’s for sure…I remember when Africa still had animals as far as the eye could see.” Ah, the good old days only they were privy to that we will never get to experience. “There’s no use going to Angkor Wat / the Everglades /all of Europe / planet Earth anymore because the glory days are over. Too bad you didn’t see it then.” ‍♀️ Oh my god you guys, STOP! How do you think that sounds to young people? And then you turn around and berate them for lacking hope and/or energy. How much harder is it to give a shit when you keep telling them everything is ruined already? I can’t even imagine the courage it takes for young people to get out of bed every day in a world that has little authentic use for them but hammers them with daily reminders of environmental tragedy and loss…to have to sit by law in a small room crammed only with others your own age, hearing over and over about the death of coral reefs, rainforests and animals that only exist now as stuffed toys in your bedroom. “Too bad you didn’t see [fill in the blank] then…it’s different/ruined/gone now.” Thank you to the young people I see on here and out in the world who DO get up every day anyway and work to make a difference. Thank you for having hope, sharing it, and doing something about the condition of the world in spite of everything.
