Pokot woman in Poroo market. Kenya. Pokots are one of the nilotic tribes living in NW Kenya. Also pastoralits, they live in remote valleys and many of them have to walk many hours up the hill to reach this tiny market. Their shoes are increíble heavy, made out of truck wheels, so they can survive the rocky paths. Once they reach this market they will invest their money in food and household goods and not in alcohol like other of the neighbouring tribes. Sample of an excellent and obscure private press lp from Scandinavia by the late oud virtuoso George mgrdichian entitled areej on the hamreem label in 1977..only issued in Scandinavia in limited numbers..featuring the great kanoon player Mohammed el akkad who is the only other musician credited here. Recorded in NYC..the music is traditional but also contemporary oriented Turkish/middle eastern grooves..with occasional western instruments spicing up the mix. As you can hear on the track here bashbushy with a nice electric bass line pushing the musicians on top..
