Very happy to find this two volume limited collectors book set documenting 50 years of Ethnopharmacological Search for Psychoactive Drugs waiting for me upon my return to California. ESPD50 was organized by a team led by Dennis McKenna, Founder of Symbio Life Sciences, PBC. Henbanes are heavy seed producers and ancient people’s who used them for medicine and ceremony purposefully cultivated them for seed production. . The leaves were a common smoking herb before tobacco was discovered and imported from the the New World to the Old where tobacco was first called “Indian henbane” and often confused with henbanes. After tobacco was introduced, the leaves of the two plants were blended together and smoked until present day. . The seeds, leaves, and flowers all have the same percentage of tropane alkaloids, but the root does not and is not used medicinally. Henbane and its close cousins have always had a wide range of important uses —even today it is a commercial crop for big pharma. It is mainly harvested for its scopolamine content for a variety of important medicines from antinauseants for NASA astronauts to the CIA’s infamous truth serum (yes it’s real and it’s scopolamine, also present in all datura and brugmansia species, and the handy side effect is amnesia). . Medicines derived from henbane species also have the potential to help with the effects of chemo therapy, to treat anxiety and panic attacks, to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s, lupus, and Lyme disease, and to help restore libido loss. Let the Northern Canadian mandrake growing experiments begin. Long-term goal: breeding a cold-hardy variety at sea level and see if the cold affects the medicinal alkaloid content. Nerd level: pretty high, but I’m okay with it. I’ve already made progress on cold hardy datura inoxia and stramonium. Connecting with other growers is key! This mandrake grower’s guide from the hay day of Mandrake House Herbs in the UK is sadly out of print. It is the best info I’ve found next to @strictlymedicinalseeds who recently published a blog post with great mandrake growing info. The photos shown are two versions of the same book by renowned American ethnobotanist Charles Bixler Heiser. The green one is the older hardcover version (sometimes with a black dust jacket with henbane flower ) and the blue one is the newer, unabridged paperback. I recommend going with the blue one for all the extra info in it. No, it’s not henbane! Everybody say hello to a wee Himalayan Mandrake aka Mandragora caulescens —named for the “caul” protecting its inner flower. Mandragora caulescens grows in high elevation areas of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and eastern China where it is a traditional remedy and in some regions is marked with a conservation status. Though only one taxonomy is currently recognized, there appear to be multiple subspecies with the caul but of differing size and flower colour (as you will see shortly when I spam you with photos now that my little ones are finally asleep). . Ancient Egyptian carved and painted limestone relief believed to depict Akhenaten and Nefertiti, but others believe it is Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesenamun. In one hand she holds a bouquet of blue lotus blossoms and in the other a closed lotus flower bud between two mandrake fruits. The lotus flower buds were the part the ancient Egyptians used to get high and they also ate mandrake fruits as an aphrodisiac.
