Here is another flip through... yes! I’ve finished another sketchbook. This one was completed in 3.5 weeks so a slower pace than my previous ones. I'm very happy with this book considering how hectic my work schedule has been preparing for three huge filming days for my next SketchingNow course. There are lots of super quick reflex sketches in this sketchbook - trying to fit a sketch in whenever I could. Plus a few blank/ emptyish pages towards the end as I was using my book for final prep for the filming days. . The sketchbook is a @StillmanandBirn Alpha Softcover 5.5×8.5″ size. For more questions about materials please check out the Sketching Tools link in bio or my Materials story highlight. . Enjoy!

So I recently discovered that my favourite sketchbook - @Moleskine A4 Landscape Watercolour sketchbook - now comes in a portrait format. Wow! this is exciting news. There is no doubt that I am very excited about this format but it has created a little dilemma for me. . I have a huge European trip coming up soon (three months worth of travel and teaching) and I just don't know whether I should just stick to my tried and true landscape format, or mix it up and take some vertical format - or take risks and take all vertical format. Maybe I should stick to landscape for the start of my trip, for my new workshops in Umbria and then try portrait for this year's Veneto tours? Since it will be the third year I have done these Veneto tours, a different format will be a new challenge. After that I could order some more sketchbooks of whatever format I want to use for the rest of the trip? . The portrait format will definitely give me some new compositional options (which I love) and will be easier to handle that than massive width of the open landscape version. However it is hard to fit on my support board. (do I have to make a bigger support board to suit it?) If I am visiting a city with tall buildings the portrait would be great, but when I'm in Scotland would I miss the panoramic possibilities of the landscape version? . Swipe to see some examples from previous trips all done in the landscape A4 Moleskine sketchbook. And how the landscape book fits on my support board. . Oh! it's such a hard decision. What do you think I should do?

A quick preview of another demo from my next online course - SketchingNow Watercolour On Location. I had to include a cafe visit didn’t I . This was taken on my iPhone while my two videographers were hard at work recording it on their big cinematic cameras. I try not not to think about how odd it must have looked to others in the cafe. Check out my stories for more behind the scenes. . If you want updates and a few free lessons in the lead up to the course please join the mailing list - link in bio.

This is my beloved White Joy which I have used nearly everyday for 6 years. It’s Lamy’s calligraphy pen but I have replaced the stub with a gold nib - it once was an EF nib but is now closer to Med. I love the balance of this pen and the nib is smooth and soft. . Just to let you all know that I have just added a heap of stories and a Materials highlight reel so you can more easily find info. It’s all on my blog but I hope these direct links help.

After the craziness of #oneweek100people2019 it’s lovely to get back to normal life. A quiet cafe visit, calmly sketching my coffee and one person (not 20 or more!). This week I'm working on my workshop for the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Amsterdam. It's called Dynamic Composition and Storytelling. I think I need to apply my 'page composition' thought to this page. . And BTW after all my turquoise testing in recent months, I've gone back to what I had in my palette at the start. Using WN Cobalt Turquoise Light and using my pre-mixed Steel's Grey for the darker version. I wonder why this is working for me now but it wasn't earlier? . For more details of my palette please check out the sketching tools link in bio or my materials highlight reel.

So I hit 100 by 10am today - Wednesday. I did 60 people sketches (most ink and watercolour) in one three hour visit to @goodfieldseatery - with time for 2 coffees and a little work while waiting for washes to dry. I’m totally exhausted but happy to try a massive push today. At one point I felt like giving up but thought it would be fun to see what happened if I kept going. Doing 20 per day is fairly easy for me as I work so fast and this challenge is all about doing more than usual. So it was worth pushing myself. . Huge thanks to the staff, especially Morgan, for cheering me on today. . I’ll share more later but just had to celebrate!

So I just thought it would be really cool to have a post dedicated to sharing your favourite skin mixes as part of the #OneWeek100People2019 challenge this week. . Even though I am experimenting with a different combination right at the moment (using up spare paint), my usual watercolour mix is Daniel Smith Monte Amiata Nautral Sienna and Winsor Newton Potter's PInk. I also use DS Cerulean Blue Chromium for shadows. I mainly sketch Asian and Caucasian skin colours as that’s what normally see at my local cafes so don’t have much experience mixing other shades. . So please share your favourite mixes/colours for all different skin hues. It doesn't have to be watercolour. I would love to hear about pencils and markers and another other medium! Can't wait to read the comments and hope it will be really helpful for everyone. Thanks in advance!

In training for #OneWeek100People2019 - After my second coffee this morning I decided to see how quickly I could draw 20 heads and think it took me about 15 minutes. These are super fast and loose, accepting the mistakes and embracing the wonkiness! Some of them I drew blind. It’s all about doing it not the end result. . There are many ways to approach the challenge (which is running 8-12 April) but I personally think that the main goal is to push yourself to do more. It doesn't matter how many people sketches you end up doing in the week, the goal is to do more than you would normally do. If however you want to hit the 100 number I suggest that you consider doing a few loose gestural type sketches (like these) early in the week. . There is defnitely something special that happens when you sketch 20 people in one go! . If you want to know more about the challenge, scroll down in my feed a little for the full details.

Here is another part of my quirky trip prep - working out how much paint to take with me. . Now before you comment that I can buy paint in Europe - yes! I know that. But I don't really want to carry around excess tubes, or have to track down Daniel Smith paint while I am travelling or bother with the hassle of trying to get the paint dry enough to use immediately. So I prefer to make up my pans beforehand. . And besides it's more fun to work out how much paint I need!!! . Last year I recorded accurately how much paint I used for my long trip and so as this year’s trip is approximately 30% longer I did some simple maths and now I have my best guess at my 3 month paint supply. Doing these early so they have time to dry (and shrink) and I can top up so they are all full! . Next I have to make the decision on my sketchbook dilemma and work out how many I think I will need. Then I will work out how to order ahead (or source local moleskine stores). It's a worry, I know! . Follow Sketching Tools link in bio or check out my Materials Highlight Reel for more information about my paint selection.
