They range in colour from dark brown and bay (red-brown) to dun (smokey-brown), which helps them to blend in with their natural habitat of heather, grass and bracken. The Exmoor pony’s most distinctive feature is the pale, oatmeal coloured hair around its muzzle, giving it the appearance of having dipped its nose in a bucket of flour. This is known as 'mealy' nose and is due to a coat trait called pangaré or mealy markings, only found in some primitive breeds of horses. They also have white rings around their eyes, pale markings on their bellies and dark brown hair on their legs, which makes them look like they are wearing black stockings. Their manes and tails are thick and long, and their coats are fine in the summer but double-layered and thick in the winter, with a soft, wooly undercoat and a longer, oily, water-repellent outer coat. No matter where we walked in rural England we were accompanied by sheep. High above the White Horse of Uffington in Avebury a couple of ewes were scratching on a fence, we played with them in Exmoor (third and fourth photos), and we saw a few black sheep (last photo). #england #rural #sheep #pasture #pastoral #avebury #doormoor #exmoor
