We can only imagine all of the imagining that is taking place here! There is no limit to what kids will make with what nature gives them.

Underwater Volcano ages 3-8 by @raisingdragons4 (Our all time favorite)
.
All you need for this experiment are two glass containers, a rock or small object to weigh down the small container, water and food coloring. Fill the large container with cold water and the small container with hot water. Place the rock in the bottom of the small container. Add food coloring to the small container. Gently place the small container in the large container and watch the eruption happen! Hot water rises to the top because the molecules in it move faster and therefore make it expand and become less dense causing it to rise. So cool!!!

The BeeBus stopped at BSAK today! This specially adapted bus travels around schools in the UAE teaching the importance of the honey bee to the environment and our survival. Did you know 85 percent of our food crops are dependent on the actions of pollinators?
Our Year 3 children were busy little bees learning about Pollination; enhancing their knowledge of Plants and Flowers their current Science topic. Relishing this unique opportunity, they sampled different kinds of honey and took part in a craft session making a pure beeswax candle. Safe to say they were all buzzing at the end of the day @BSAKeco #BSAKY3 #onlyatBSAK #bees#experientiallearning #environment #science #topic #learningisfun #britishcurriculum #abudhabi #bsakabudhabi #abudhabischools

A field sketch and lecture notes from 2018 student Emily (@theclassybackpacker). The sketch on top is the view from Camp 18 looking over the Gilkey Trench. The lecture notes are from a student-led lecture on climate change and social justice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We love this image because it gets at two critical parts of the JIRP curriculum: (a) science communication and (b) the expedition as a team initiative.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Science communication is a thread that runs through everything we teach. At every stage of the research process we discuss how to understand and discuss science research. This includes workshops on reading science papers, taking effective field notes (including sketches!), practicing research presentations, and using photography, drawing, and other art forms to reach appropriate audiences. We are firm believers in the importance of these communication skills for all our students, whether they go on in academia, education, policy, industry, or something completely unrelated to Earth science.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At JIRP, once we get through basic safety training, we have a bit of a ceremony to officially mark the day when "The Expedition has started!" (those words, specifically, are traditional). The significance of this is that we consider students, staff, and faculty to be semi-equal members of the Expedition. Everyone comes to JIRP for a different role, but we share the basic responsibilities of safety on the glacier, preparing food and maintaining the facilities, and keeping each other safe. This approach is driven by the very real circumstances of living in a remote area - except for weather-dependent helicopters, we are very literally dependent on each other for survival. We extend this mentality to academics. Several students pointed out a hole in our academic curriculum in 2018, and they took the responsibility to fill it by delivering a lecture on the missing material. We couldn't have been more proud.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

f e a t u r e :
authentic learning
__
Authentic learning experiences allow our children to connect with the world around them.
They engage their senses and it allows them to create meaningful, useful and shared outcomes.
Research shows that the movement towards authentic learning environments is key to ensuring the acquired knowledge doesn’t become inert or unused.

The original post @raising_up_wild_things is worth a read... discussing and reminding us what authentic learning can mean as we examine our sharing platform.
So much beauty is found in these little squares, but the story behind the images... the journey and the struggles, are the important work, it is where the actual learning takes place.
We are all trying our best, where we are and with what we have.
