Sturdivant Hall at Selma -This mansion is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival neo-classic architecture in the Southeast. Built in 1852-1856 as a townhouse for Col. Edward Watts, the 10-room, 6,000-square-foot mansion cost $69,900 to construct. Artisans from Italy were brought in to do the plaster and marble work throughout the home. The marble was imported from Italy. The City of Selma purchased Sturdivant Hall in 1957 and it now serves as a historic house museum. The house contains period antique furnishings, porcelain and doll collections, as well as an impressive collection of art. A tour of this site includes the house, detached kitchen, gift shop and formal garden. Sturdivant Hall was documented in the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1934 and added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1973. When we pulled up to this home I assumed that it was abandoned until a super friendly dog came running over to us. I then saw smoke coming out of one of the chimneys. I'll admit, I didn't take many shots because I was I was trying to keep the dog out of the highway(the owner later said he had already been hit 4 times). The owner came out and told us that his great grandfather had built the house in 1880. Back then, it was missing its porch. Its windows were all broken out and most of its remaining doors hung on by a single hinge. But the foundation was sturdy and the roof was in good shape. I remember thinking that this one could be saved. I had a dream of one day riding by, and seeing it restored to its former glory. But a category 5 hurricane had different plans for this place.

Rosalie in Natchez, MS, was built in 1823, on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. ↔️Swipe to see this home as it looked in 1903 and also, photos of its original owners. •••••••• Built in the late 1850s, the Harper Home would become a centerpiece for the Battle of Bentonville in March of 1865 as Sherman’s troops marched through North Carolina. Commandeered by the Union army during the battle for a field hospital, at least 500 Union wounded and 45 Confederate wounded were treated here during the 3 day battle, while 10 members of the Harper Family stayed upstairs. When fighting ended, the Union wounded were transported to nearby Goldsboro, while Confederate wounded were paroled and left here to convalesce in the care of the John and Amy Harper family (they’re both pictured in photo no. 4 of this post). 20 of the soldiers who passed away in their care are buried in the family cemetery.
