"We need charismatic creatures that can turn our attention to the seas and inspire real change, creatures of grace and power". Sharks can be the corner stone of ocean conservation if we harness the fascination that people have with these magnificent creatures. Lets replace fear with fascination! “Detox” is a scam. The basic idea is that modern life results in the accumulation of “toxins” in your body, and every now and then you should have a tune up by flushing those toxins out. The specific toxins are never mentioned. There is also no basic science reason or clinical evidence to support the notion that the methods recommended actually remove any specific toxins from the body.
Of course we are assaulted by toxins on a daily basis. Everything is potentially a toxin – as the saying goes, the dose makes the poison. Some things are toxic at tiny doses while others would require a significant dose to cause problems. Even water is toxic at high enough dose (usually around 10 liters or more per day). The natural world basically wants to kill us. Plants evolved toxins to protect themselves from being eaten, for example. That is why animals evolved mechanisms to process and remove toxins that get into their system. One primary function of our livers, which are giant chemical factories, is to filter anything potentially toxic from the blood, metabolize it, and excrete it. Toxins are also filtered from the blood by the kidneys, and excreted in the urine. A healthy liver and pair of kidneys are all most of us need to sufficiently “detox.” Problems arise when the liver or kidneys are not healthy enough to do their job, or if you ingest a poison in a sufficient dose to overwhelm these organs.
Sometimes people deliberately expose themselves to harmful levels of a drug (alcohol, for example), and may need to be legitimately “detoxed” from that drug.
The term “detox,” however, has been hijacked for clever marketing of worthless products and treatments. Like much of what happens under the umbrella of so-called alternative medicine, a successful marketing slogan is more important than science or evidence.

♀️Who knew
.
.
Nutrition is one of those really weird careers.
.
No one would tell an engineer that their knowledge and schooling was pointless and driven by money hungry corporations out to make everyone’s lives terrible.
.
But a dietitian?
We’re corrupt and have no idea what we’re talking about.♀️
.
Guess what? We know.
.
We know a small amount of all of it and a huge amount of our speciality. We also know that there is so much that we don’t know. We know that our clients know their bodies better than we ever could. We know that the science is ever changing. We know that nutrition is important but it’s not everything. We know that we don’t live in a vacuum where one way of eating will work for everyone’s health wellbeing and lifestyle.
.
Tag a RD that you appreciate- it’s not RD day, or month, but who needs an excuse to celebrate♀️
Posted @withrepost • @damon_mccune Do detox teas work
.
As far as “detoxing”, no, detox teas do not do that. Your liver, kidneys, and lungs do that.♂️
.
Supplying the body with the appropriate nutrients to maximize organ function and water are likely to be the most beneficial in terms of helping the body rid itself of unwanted items. Although, water should still be consumed within appropriate amounts so you don’t kill yourself by inducing hyponatremia (which has been observed in some using detox drink regimens and can be fatal).
.
For weight loss, you will likely lose weight since you are STARVING yourself and creating a severe caloric deficit. This is not optimal and can lead to nutrient deficiencies, injury, and potentially eating disorders.
.
Detox products are marketing hype and the way that they are often advertised for use can be seriously dangerous. Stop wasting your money and buy some quality food. If you’re trying to lose weight, create an appropriate caloric deficit and engage in appropriate activity.
.
As a side note, you cannot effectively spot-reduce belly fat. That’s like saying you're only going to lose fat in your right arm today. Nope, not a thing. We’ll save this for another post though.

It’s very important to understand relative difference vs. absolute difference. Many news outlets and researchers take advantage of the fact that many people don’t understand this in order to publish attention grabbing headlines.
Here’s an example related to food: a 2013 study showed that “organic milk has 62% more omega-3 fatty acids than conventional milk.” That information doesn’t mean much without knowing the absolute increase.
The difference was 25.5 mg/100g in organic milk to 15.9 mg/100g in conventional, so that’s an absolute difference of 9.6 mg/100g. .
Considering that salmon contains about 2,260mg/100g and the recommendation is 250-500 mg/day, you can see that the 62% more claim is insignificant as milk isn’t even a significant source of omega-3’s to begin with. .

I will never. Stop. Sharing. This. Because you deserve a relationship with food that supports your life rather than taking over your life. Food addiction is neither supported by literature nor a useful concept in the context of health, but feeling addicted to food is common - especially if you’re restricting food or holding certain foods off-limits. The best news? You CAN learn how to eat food you’re scared of. And enjoy it. And move on with your life after eating it.
If you’re looking for the science (or lack thereof) surrounding sugar addiction, you can catch a replay of a webinar @jessiehoffman_phd and I did last month on the blog!
