Their “we got these grades when we were young” or “we climbed a mountain unlike you” or a movie they watched on VCR with their best friend after school. They’d share parts of a life you haven’t lived with them to show you a world that exists beyond your own.⁣ ⁣ 3. Clap the loudest and the proudest. They always stand in the front when you’re on stage- be it your school annual day where you dance to Bam Bam Bole or your convocation where you receive your diploma- their smile so wide it could suffice for a lifetime and beyond.⁣ ⁣ 4. Teach you how to ride. They hold your bicycle and promise to not let go. But then, before you know, you’re flying solo through the lanes. Just like that, they give you the strength and the belief that you can do it, even when they’re not around.⁣ ⁣ 5. Make fun of you, for you. Perhaps it’s your first set of bangs or the music you blast in your room, or how you could never ask that girl out, or the fact that your football club lost- they crack jokes (mostly lame, sometimes savage) and laugh the loudest, almost teaching you that not everything in life- you included- needs to be taken too seriously all the time.⁣ ⁣ 6. Show you that love is in the little things. Every time he has to leave his daughter in the hospital he beats his chest, and she does it back He says he always does it to let her know that they share the same heartbeat and that he's fighting with her ❤ This is Josh and his wife Gretchen's youngest daughter, Opal, who was diagnosed with AFM, a rare condition that affects the nervous system. She spent 7 weeks in the pediatric intensive care unit, and has been in a rehabilitation center for the last few weeks. When I became pregnant, I had this idea in my head that my husband would make an awesome daddy. Truth be told, throughout my pregnancy, we were both totally not sure of what to expect when Tommy came. We vacillated between ecstatic and utterly terrified but the difference was that I got to form this amazing bond with my son as he grew in my belly, and my husband merely got to witness it from the outside. He didn’t get to know him like i had during those 9 (ahem.. 10) months. And I remember telling him “I already know this baby’s amazing soul, and I can’t wait for you to meet him. He is going to light up your life, just wait.” And when he arrived, Thomas got to see him first. And I was looking at Thomas as he laid eyes on his son for the very first time, and all the fear and questions faded and were replaced by the largest surge of love and light I’ve ever seen flash across someone’s face. And when tommy spent 4 days in NICU for aspirating during delivery, Thomas didn’t leave his side. And since then- all those ideas I’d had in my head have been blown out of the water. He is nothing like any expectation I had ever had about what kind of dad he would someday become. He’s more incredible than I could’ve ever dreamed, and I’ve got to watch this incredible daddy form a very strong bond with his son. From middle of the night wakings to diaper changes to play time to dance parties to nightly stories to outdoor adventures to teaching him about the world and anything and everything in between, he has been there every single step of the way. Most of all- he makes time, give his love and cherishes every moment. He shows my son that his mommy is loved. He shows him what it means to work hard, to make mistakes, and that he always has a safe place. And, in my wildest dreams, I couldn’t ask for anything more. We love you, Thomas! And happy Father’s Day to all of the other amazing, incredible dads out there, including my own!
