This student from our #Mexico: #Oaxaca- #Pacific Rim #fieldschool was excited to find such a magnificent piece laying on the ground at Tula but after quick analysis by an #archaeologist at the museum onsite, it was discovered to be fake. Many local sellers appealing to the tourist industry produce such replica items using the model of #Toltec #iconography and craftsmanship. Throughout its long history, it has sat in a border zone between various ethnic, cultural, and geopolitical groups. In the second millennium BCE, these included Canaanites, Hurrians, and Hittites. In the first millennium, they involved the polities of Israel, Phoenicia (Lebanon) and Aram (Syria). With emphasis on Roman mosaics, found in abundance at the Roman city of Stobi, Macedonia, students will learn the processes a mosaic floor endures after excavation and the consequences of conservation treatment and maintenance (or lack thereof). We will work on mosaic floors in situ, or with fragments at the Stobi Institute. Top Discovery of 2018 from our Israel: Tel Abel Beth Maacah field school (link in bio)⠀⠀ .⠀ "During excavation this year, we found a complete jar brimming with animal knuckle bones called "astragali" from the 9th century BCE. When counted, it turned out there were 425 of them inside the jar! Such bones are known to have been used either as game pieces or for cultic divination in antiquity. The Biblical text (2 Samuel 20) talks of a "Wise Woman" who prophesied at Abel Beth Maacah. Could this pot with the hundreds of bones be related to her mission? Initial examination of the bones show they belonged to sheep, goat, and deer but not pigs or cows. This bearded male figure head made of faience (a kind of glass derivative), with a decorated headband and distinct coiffure, is being held for display by the student who uncovered it at our Israel: Abel Beth Maacah field school (link in bio). ⠀ .⠀ It was found in a room inside a large citadel dating to the Iron Age IIA (9th century BCE) and seems to represent an elite figure, perhaps even a king.
