I'm going to play a little #marchmeetthemaker catch up and combine ADVICE and SELF CARE. Suuuper long post if you read it let me know what you think, or leave a flower suggestion ⤵️ #365daysofstitches . So first off I'd say find joy in your own journey as an artist/maker. Practice makes progress, there is no such thing as reaching perfection, so stop telling yourself you're not good enough or are missing the mark. Enjoy the ride! This leads into tip number 2: don't fall into the caparison trap! This past week at @genchurchaz we had (another) fantastic message that ties into this so well (I'll post info on where to watch in my stories), but some great takeaway that relates to this is that as artists we can be really happy with the things we made... until we go on Instagram or Pinterest and see all the "awesome" stuff other people make. We can let that comparison leave us dissatisfied with where we are at and the abilities God has given us (which can grow with practice and patience). Comparison is the killer of joy! When we focus on our own blessings/talents it will make us grateful, but if we focus on the blessings/accomplishments of others it can make us resentful. Also, often in this case, we're not comparing apples to apples. You might be one year into your craft, while someone else has been developing it for a decade. "Don't compare your season of planting to someone else's season of harvest" (thanks Pastor @ryanvisonti) Lastly, don't be afraid to get paid. This is a tough one because I feel like pricing is one of the hardest things we have to to as artists/makers. But my advice is basically this: come up with a pricing strategy that is fair to you and that you are comfortable with and stick to it. It might look different that someone else's and that's fine. For me I keep a log of hours so I can try to give myself a fair hourly wage. This also helps me when custom orders come up so I can make an educated guess on the amount of time a project will take, add that to materials and come up with a quote. I would also say that custom orders should always be more than a ready-made item (this is in the Etsy handbook too). So long... continued below

A little nursing transformation tonight because even though I’ve been on stay-cay this week, I’m ALWAYS Nurse Lauren‍⚕️‍♀️Plus it’s almost grad season AND it’s certified nurses day, so let’s celebrate friends You know, earning those two sometimes-elusive letters behind my name was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. And so was adding that “C” on there too. Specialties can definitely be tricky. Especially one like the NICU, since you really don’t learn much about it in school. And even with experience there is still SO MUCH to learn each and every day. But I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again...I am a FIRM believer that even when you go against the norm of “2 years in medsurg” that all those well-meaning professors will preach to you, and even when you feel like you’re overwhelmed trying to learn all the intricacies of a super special specialty, when you know in your heart where you’re meant to be, you HAVE to follow it I graduated from nursing school almost eight years ago, and I’ve been certified in high-risk neonatal care for almost four. There isn’t a single day I’ve ever regretted either. But really? Those letters don’t really matter as much as we make them out to in the end. It’s what’s INSIDE that matters most. So yes it’s hard. It takes a lot of days. And no matter what letters you’re working on for behind your name, keep going. Just always keep your heart in it. That’s what makes it so worth it EVERY day . . {Also fun fact...I graduated nursing school with a 2.5 year old and about 34weeks pregnant with my second child. I also earned my certification when my third child was 14 months old. As technology has evolved, work and leisure have begun to bleed into each other. There was a time when work and leisure had boundaries - when you went in to work, you couldn’t chat up your friends, shop on the internet, or listen to a personalized playlist. When you went home, you left your tools at work. Phone calls from your boss or coworkers were rare, and maybe even nonexistent. . . . Now, our leisure time bleeds into work…work bleeds into leisure time, and without those boundaries, there is this sense of, well, flatness, or sameness. . . . Production, productivity, being productive is the new ethic, a new way of moralizing and giving meaning to our lives. A productive day = good. Nonproductive day = bad. Productivity drives us to optimize and life hack everything, from shopping lists to meditation. Remember when taking a bath was a way of relaxing? Now we have optimized it, and call it “self care.” . . . Here’s the problem: finding meaning outside yourself is always, always going to let you down. Everything changes, most things fall apart. Here’s the solution: Find those things that IN THE DOING bring you joy, and do more of those this week. Create. Write. Play video games (really!), throw pots, read up on the French Revolution or cook a new recipe. . . . Be less busy. As a child, I was told by my guardians that I would wind up in a wheelchair when I grew up [due to progressive muscular dystrophy]. It was never presented in a positive light, more like to prevent me from dreaming big. And that t e r r i f i e d me. As a kid, I would constantly say if I wound up in a wheelchair and couldn’t walk, then and there would be the end. I was very “active” as a child. Always moving, attempting sports, skateboarding, cartwheeling. My daydreams always consisting of me dancing, doing gymnastics, and acting. I kept that charade up through my late teens. Then in my twenties, I slowly stopped doing things. In some part, due to other chronic illnesses popping up and causing fatigue and other symptoms. But it’s also due to physical weakness and not being able to keep up. The chronic illness community paired with losing my ability to walk after a paralysis and then a stoke, completely reversed my thinking about wheelchairs. They are merely my legs. I remember while in a powerchair in rehab after my stroke, I was out and about, not in bed, doing anything and everything! There wasn’t enough for me to do, in fact. This wheelchair is the entire reason I’ve been able to enjoy this week, because without it I would have been stuck in bed. What little walking I can do was completely compromised by a very painful sunburn. This chair is not a death sentence. This chair is freedom. #disabledandcute

Sometimes we want something so badly, and when it doesn’t work out as we hoped, in the moment we feel crushed. Then something else comes along, perhaps unexpectedly, and it turns out to be even better for us than what we originally wanted. Has this also happened to you?
