A bit of a stressful afternoon was had by this little lady when Mummy lost a couple of non-essential bits (phone and passports ) when there was a Eurostar to catch, so she calmed herself down on the train by doing her finger breathing. Well done Billie Bob ❤️. Tracing the silhouette of her hand, Billie breathes in as she traces the finger up, and breathes out as the finger comes down, taking a little pause between each inhalation and exhalation. This slows the breathing down and also gives a physical sensation to focus on, helping us drop down into our bodies and leave our heads for a little while. I love that Billie does this out of habit now, she dips into her Mindfulness toolbox whenever she wants to calm down a little bit. So easy, so simple, so effective. I wish all kids knew these simple self care techniques. Onwards on my mission! The science of breathing stands on quite ancient foundations. Centuries of wisdom instructs us to pay closer attention to our breathing, the most basic of things we do each day. And yet, maybe because breathing is so basic, it’s also easy to ignore. .
While using controlled deep breathing to calm the brain has been around for ages, only recently has science started uncovering how it works. A 2016 study accidentally stumbled upon the neural circuit in the brain stem that seems to play the key role in the breathing-brain control connection. The circuit is part of what’s been called the brain’s “breathing pacemaker” because it can be adjusted by altering breathing rhythm slow, controlled breathing decreases activity in the circuit; fast, erratic breathing increases activity, which in turn influences emotional states. Exactly how this happens is still being researched, but knowing the pathway exists is a big step forward. Simple controlled breathing exercises like finger breathing works by focusing the mind on a steady breath and regulating the circuit.
