When I first got diagnosed with ADHD, all I did was read about my deficits. This brought me so low that I couldn't imagine any part of me that deserved to be acknowledged or appreciated. . . I constantly considered myself damaged or less than. . . With the support of a great therapist, friends, spiritual teachers, and other ADHDers who also lifted me up, I started to make room for the things I was passionate about, and allowed my focus to shift towards the ways that I actually DO shine. . . In every difficult moment, every painful time, there is a resilience there shining through us, a glimmer of strength that carries us to the next moment and keeps us reaching for growth and transformation. . . You shine in your own way, and the way you glimmer is needed in this world. Don't ever forget that.

If we've spent a lifetime trying to a hide or bury our emotions, then starting to feel our feelings is will likely feel weird, uncomfortable, and maybe even scary. . . We might have grown up in a hectic or chaotic environment that was overwhelming, so we buried our feelings to try to maintain some sense of control. . . We might have learned to shove our feelings down because if we did show emotion growing up then we got dismissed, belittled, ridiculed, ignored, or abused. . . Regardless of what the reasons are, we found ways to avoid feelings in order to keep us safe. . . But when we start on a healing journey we will often start to feel things we either didn't know was there, or consciously kept buried because it was simply too much, too scary, or too big of an emotion to feel or process alone. . . This is why I want you to know that it takes a heck of a lot of courage to step into our nervous system in a new way and actually allow those feelings to be felt. It's brave because it requires a new ability to trust that feeling our feelings IS safe enough. And this is something so new and different for our brains to recognize.

We dwell on intrusive memories of the past or fret about what may or may not happen in the future. We need to live more in the moment. Living in the moment—also called mindfulness—is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. When you become mindful, you realize that you are not your thoughts; you become an observer of your thoughts from moment to moment without judging them.
