ALLERGY NEWS ——————————————- NEW THERAPY TARGETS GUT BACTERIA TO PREVENT AND REVERSE FOOD ALLERGIES ———————————————- Monday, June 24th 2019 . by Brigham and Women's Hospital . A new study, led by investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital, identifies the species of bacteria in the human infant gut that protect against food allergies, finding changes associated with the development of food allergies and an altered immune response. In preclinical studies in a mouse model of food allergy, the team found that giving an enriched oral formulation of five or six species of bacteria found in the human gut protected against food allergies and reversed established disease by reinforcing tolerance of food allergens. The team's results are published in Nature Medicine. . "This represents a sea change in our approach to therapeutics for food allergies," said co-senior author Lynn Bry, MD, PhD, director of the Massachusetts Host-Microbiome Center at the Brigham. "We've identified the microbes that are associated with protection and ones that are associated with food allergies in patients. If we administer defined consortia representing the protective microbes as a therapeutic, not only can we prevent food allergies from happening, but we can reverse existing food allergies in preclinical models. So happy to see this sign at a local park this morning! Last week, we went to a park by our house and after a few minutes, my stomach sank as I realized we weren’t in a safe situation for Pearl. There was food everywhere and parents and children eating all around. We couldn’t escape it and I knew we had to leave. It’s not anyone’s fault, it’s just something we cannot be around. However, seeing this sign today (and how big it was!!) made us very happy. I’m not sure if everyone reads it, but it’s pretty hard to miss.

My 21 year old patient never had fish his whole life due to a reaction after touching salmon at 3 years old. His skin testing was negative to all fish except salmon. He was challenged to these fishes today and passed! His decision to pursue this now was he’s going to Japan and wants the full experience. In part 2 of her latest saga, after suffering anaphylaxis from eating fish over the holidays, Bethenny had an encounter while flying. The airline she was flying was serving Bass, which she protested (she said she confirmed beforehand they wouldn’t). Reports are conflicting whether the pilot turned the plane around or not. She tweeted that the pilot shamed her by making an announcement regarding the situation. Just this week we heard about an 11 year old Brooklyn boy dying from possible fish inhalation from cooking. In the end, it seems they decided not to serve the fish and she was ok. “There are 7 allergen groups & fewer are airborne. The airlines and world needs to change.
