. NO HATCH, NO PROBLEM . . When you’re new to the sport, you always hear about matching the hatch. So, when you walk up to the bank as a new angler, and aren’t greeted with scene like the one above by @greenriverflyfisher, you might be surprised, confused, and disappointed. Most of all, you might lack direction. . . If you fish a lot (or even if you don’t), the majority of your time on the water will NOT be spent during a distinct hatch, especially not one as dense as the video shown above. You’re far more likely to look out on the water, and not see much. No consistent rises, no spinner fall, no insects on the surface. When you see this, there’s no reason to be crestfallen the way I was early on - fish will still feed, and insects are still there… they’re just not hatching. . . When there’s not an active hatch, I’m almost always going to reach for a streamer or nymph. That’s not to say you can’t coax a rise with a dry, but I tend to use dry flies for a distinct hatch, since they are imitating hatching insects afterall. Fortunately for us, trout and other fish can’t rely solely on adult insects to sustain them, so they feed on larval stage insects (nymphs), baitfish, crustaceans, and terrestrials. Meaning you’re in good shape even if there isn’t a storm of sailboat wings on the water’s surface. . . To guide me in situations like this, I try to gather clues. Looking under rocks is an acid test to find the insects that are most prevalent in your stretch of river. It’ll give you an idea of species, approximate size, and color. Try to pick a fly that resembles that. You can also choose to use a search pattern. Versatile streamer patterns like the woolly bugger and muddler minnow are great in a variety of contexts because of their broadly suggestive nature, and can help you catch fish even when you don’t have a particular insect to hone in on. You can also tie on suggestive nymphs like a prince nymph or pheasant tail, which are a couple of my favorite patterns that I default to on many occasions. . . Over time, you’ll develop ‘confidence flies’ that you’ll use when you have no other clues, and soon a hatch will become ‘nice-to-have’, not a requirement for success.

We’re back for more #berkleyfishingtips! This month we’re sharing 3 Basic Knots That Every Angler Needs to Know, starting with the Improved Clinch Knot. This knot provides a good method of securing a fishing line to a hook, lure, or swivel. The Improved Clinch Knot is harder to tie in heavier lines, so try to stick with 30lb test or less. #bassfishing #fishingtackle #fishingline #fishingknot #fishingtips

. BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY . . When anglers are new to the game, they may not recognize the true importance of a stealthy approach when fishing clear, shallow water. Until you’ve seen a fish dart away at the slightest glimpse of your shadow, or the subtle movement of your rod tip, it’s hard to appreciate just how careful you need to be with wary trout. . . As you can see in this shot by @flyfishingtesinoclub, sometimes you need to drop to a knee to properly fish a spot. You may need to plot out a path to the fish that isn’t as direct, but is more out-of-sight, in order to keep it from fleeing. There are all kinds of circumstances that will dictate just how you choose to approach a fish, but the basic tenets remain the same. Remain low to the ground if you can, avoid sudden movements, and keep your eyes on the fish. If it appears that it is becoming agitated, either remain perfectly still, or get out of sight and give it some time to relax. I wish I could tell you that both of these things will help you “talk down” a fish that is getting worked up, but the fact remains that sometimes it’s too late by the time you realize the fish is on to you. For that reason, it’s better to use an abundance of caution from the start, and avoid being noticed in the first place. . . I like to approach fish from the downstream side, since fish generally station themselves with their heads facing into the current. Fish can see a lot, but they can’t see behind them. Moving slowly and purposefully is also essential. Vibrations from heavy footfalls, the sounds of clinking rocks, and the shadows cast by careless body movement all will set off a cautious trout, so keeping movement to a minimum is key. . . I’ll add one important disclaimer - you can’t expect to be perfect. If you spook a fish, shrug your shoulders and move on to the next one. You have a better chance coming back and trying again later than you do by peppering it with superfluous casts, and you certainly won’t help yourself by getting down about a missed opportunity. Time on the water is too precious for that - just keep moving (slowly, lol) and learn from your mistakes. . . . . . .
