A common question that I get while teaching handstands is “Should I point, flex or floint while inverted?”.
Let’s try a little exercise, stand up
First, point your toes. Notice when you do this, the shins are stretched, and your calves are contracted. When your feet are fully engaged through this pointing action, it lengthens and activates the muscles in your legs, which provides greater stability and control and helps lengthen the body while in a headstand, forearm stand, or handstand.
Now to the opposite, and flex your toes towards you. Notice here it’s the opposite, your shins contract, and your calves lengthen.
Now try flointing – the balance between a point and a floint and it stretches the muscles and tendons along the front of the legs, which are difficult to lengthen without this specific action.
How to floint: Press the ball of the foot out, as if you were pointing. Then pull the toes back towards you – and spread them. Spread them like mad.
Now try all of them in your inversion practice. What one gives you better stability, leg engagement and balance? Personally for me, I 90% of the time point, and other other 10% is flointing.
