Having just got back from a week of fossil hunting on the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, there are sometimes specimens that I collect which I’ve already got similar specimens in my collection. I always feel that these are better finding their way to a new home so tonight I’ve uploaded a few fossils onto eBay with no reserve and super low starting price so there are some bargains to be had! There’s some great Nanotyrannus teeth, a beauty of a Triceratops crown, a large T Rex segment, a Theropod claw and a really rare Leptictis mammal skull. Another quick video showcasing some prep work that I’m doing following my Hell Creek Formation Montana dig last week. This is a nice Pachycephalosaurus claw but still covered in the field consolidant used to protect it. With a little acetone and careful use of an exacto knife, it’s fairly easy to remove (even in the deep blood grooves). Pachycephalosaurus unguals are differentiated from Thescelosaurus due to their more distinct curve. Finally made it to the legendary Stuttgart Museum of Natural History and it was worth the wait. Many people have described this as the single best paleontology Museum in the world and I can see why. There is so much to see, all beautifully preserved and presented. It’s been 20 years since I last visited Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History and it was so worth the wait. It remains one of the greatest museums, full of amazing specimens - I miss my time as an undergraduate working behind the scenes. Over the next couple of days I’ll showcase a few of them as best I can. I’m going to start with this one. This is the skeletal remains of an Ichthyosaur called Stenopterygius megacephalus (S. Quadriscissus) from the famous lower Jurassic Holzmaden region of Germany. What’s amazing about this fossil is that it was one of the first Ichthyosaur fossils to show the outline of soft tissue around the fins, paddle and tail. Interestingly this is not preserved skin tissue but actually Cyanobacteria which formed a film as the soft tissue decayed. Check out this insane 130 million year old dinosaur footprint we encountered at Brook Bay last night! Beautifully preserved in the clays this is a track of an ornithopod, most probably Iguanodon, the most common dinosaur we find here in the Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight! Dinosaur footprints preserved in the foreshore clays are relatively uncommon in comparison to the famous sandstone footcasts. Spent today on the Yorkshire Coast again. It wasn’t one of my most productive days but good to get the fresh air. This is a quick video I took popping the matrix off a nice, but badly worn Dactylioceras ammonite. When they’re this beach-worn I often walk past them, but this one popped out really well, exposing a great centre. Back home this evening I removed the most worn outer whorl and gave it a light coat of paraloid (which I’ve shown at the end of the video).
