Entrepreneurs are risk-takers. They tap onto opportunities, which most people don't see or take seriously. But sometimes, they choose to play blind, justifying it with their "gut feeling", such as: A. Building solutions without market research. B. Making investor pitches without revenue. Unless they get extremely lucky, this foolish optimism results in heavy losses, be it their time or money. Instead, take calculated risks by doing this: 1. Understand the risk: Through proper market research. Analyse the factors which will help you succeed. 2. Value the risk: Estimate the maximum possible loss. Don't let failure result in bankruptcy. 3. Hedge the risk: Build in a strong Plan B, to reduce losses if things don't go as planned. That doesn't mean that you stop taking risks. It's important to take bold decisions to make it big. But back the same with sound data, logic and planning. One of the worst things you can to do to an employee is to give them a role & then not enabling them to fulfil that role. One of the top human motivators is autonomy. So why do we feel the need to micromanage people? It usually comes down to a manager not wanting to lose touch with the doing part of the work they left behind or they simply don't trust their team member to fulfil the role they have hired them for. Both are negatives and give the employee a sour taste in their mouth. Which quickly turns into resentment. What's great is they can both easily be avoided, by empowering the employee to work to their best abilities by letting go and trusting them, and should they need your help, you coach them rather than tell them what to do. The main point of being a coach, which is part of being a great business leader is the premise of coaching is people work things out themselves. If people understand rationally why they need to do something the change will occur and therefore they learn. No normal person would do a startup. - You leave your stable job, i.e. income source. - Live a secluded life, burning your savings. - Operate under very-limited resources. - Knowing quite well that it has a 90% failure rate. So why do some people do it? To make a difference and live by their own terms (after the initial hustle). When things become tough and the startup is on the verge of shutting down, it is easy to blame it on lack of funding, competitive market, co-founder disputes, etc. But almost always, a startup can work if the founders don't give up: - If funding gets scarce, the right founders stop everything and start selling what they have. - If the market becomes competitive, they bring down their prices and use the time to improve their offering with war-speed efficiency; to get back the profits. - If there are disputes, they battle it out internally; but stick together to make their baby flourish. I know it's easier said than done. But the only way a startup can truly shut down, is if the founders call it a day. A lot of people think performance equals potential- I say: Wrong!⠀ Performance is your potential minus interference.⠀ In business we see the same formula. IF you want your business to grow and your people to perform (REACH THE POTENTIAL) you need to take care of the issues, of what’s blocking that potential. The success comes from the quality and speed of the decisions you make that solve your issues. ⠀ This is core work, it has to be done on a leadership level first and then really helping everyone else to remove blocks. The best way to do that is of course to be really OPEN and honest about the issues. List them all out on a paper/ board/doc and go all the way to their root. ⠀ Things get a bit more complicated if you’re unable to identify the interferences. In that case you’d really benefit from an objective observer and someone to point you in the right direction. If you’re solo- definitely reach out to a coach or a friend who can listen and synthesize what they hear. But please go after fulfilling that potential, because the whole world benefits from your full expression and power. Sounded cool, right? ⠀ ⠀ Here we are today:⠀ ⠀ There is the never ending to-do list...⠀ ... Decisions, decisions, decisions- as big as delegating and hiring and as small as whether or not go to the office, or just not wear pants today and work from home...⠀ ...The facade of confidence and success, when you're actually freaking out on the inside.⠀ ...As you're growing, other people start relying on you too...⠀ ...The pressure to say yes to meetings, events or projects, when you probably shouldn't... ⠀ ...Hitting a creative wall and probably losing motivation too...⠀ Sound familiar?
