It’s the superbloom season and I love seeing everyone enjoying the flowers! However, as a photographer and an avid hiker, i take it as part of my responsibility to remind those who are walking off trail into the wildflowers during this super bloom season to please stay on the trail. I’ve seen probably 13 of my friends now posting photos of them and their children stepping and sitting and laying in the wildflowers (and even more in all the hiking groups) we recently visited, and it is killing me. I will admit, it is so tempting to step off trail! The flowers are so pretty and we want to immerse ourselves in the beauty of it... but at what cost. A photo for Instagram or Facebook? And I’ve done it too, but “I’m just one person” is what literally everyone thinks. We have to train ourselves to appreciate and enjoy nature so others can too in a way that isn’t destructive. Not just for a photo. And we have to do better or we won’t be able to enjoy the flowers in the future Please leave no trace. Please don’t trample the flowers. Please stay on the trail. It could take years to recover, if ever. It is such a wonderful time and I hope you get to enjoy this beautful season, but please keep in mind that wildflowers are delicate af and if we step on them, it’s quite possible they won’t ever return. MT. HOOD // One of the reasons I love the outdoors so much is because it makes me feel less shameful about this #shamelessselfie. How? You might ask. Well as a mom, and also a plus size woman, I tend to take photos of everyone else. I am not as comfortable in front of the lens as I used to be, but I am the one carrying this curious child through snow on snowshoes and gaining thousands of feet in elevation. I want her to remember that we did this together. That she can enjoy the outdoors at any size, any age, any demographic, and circumstance. And most of all, that we enjoy the outdoors together. I found an amazing group of women who support this kind of feeling, and build each other up in the outdoors no matter your size, age, skin color, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Perhaps it’s a little selfish but we don’t want to miss out on all the best hikes when we travel. When we plan our days out, we always try to pick the best hikes for everyone. We don’t automatically discount hikes that we think might be a bit too far for our kids, since we still have the ability to give them a lift along the way. Depending on the day, we might do a mix of walking and carrying or we might just plan to carry them the last few kilometres. Usually by that point they are more than ready to get a little break. For this tour around Utah’s incredible national parks, we’ve been testing out the @piggybackrider #ad We’ve learned a few things along the way. If you are looking to buy one, here are my top 5 tips for having the most success with it. 1. Do a few practice runs. If your child is used to being carried in a soft structured carrier where they are sitting, you’ll need to give it a few tries. Do this before you leave if possible. 2. Get the height right. You want them to be able to stand without having to crouch or bend to hold on. 3. Let them lean in. My guy likes to lean into my back. I think this gives his legs a bit of a break and he’s much more comfortable for longer periods of time. 4. Teach your kids to only get off when it’s safe. You need to lower yourself down before they can hop off. They get this pretty quickly though... 5.
