Susan Sontag once said ‘photographs...help people to take possession of a space in which they are insecure,’ (in reference to tourists capturing landscapes). Yet after reading her ideas on photography last night I was reminded of the bravery of the many women who have stood up to my camera, claiming their talent and connection to plants. It’s an honour to make an image from such love, to show how flowers make those who know them feel. Ellen Seagraves from @chicfloralsmd .

Her one-time best friend Truman Capote wrote of Babe Paley (born on July 5, 1915) ‘Mrs. P had only one fault: she was perfect. Otherwise, she was perfect.’ But, thinking he was Proust, he betrayed her in his roman a clef, Answered Prayers. The youngest of the fabulous Cushing Sisters, Barbara (always Babe) was also the most beautiful. As biographer Sally Beddell-Smith wrote ‘her beauty soon became the idealized model for American women. Taken separately, her facial features were imperfect: the lips too thin, the nose sharply aquiline, the jaw a trifle large. But together with her dark, flashing eyes, sculpted bone structure, skin as luminous as mother-of-pearl, and the long neck of a Modigliani woman, the elements came together as a work of art.’ Daughters of renowned Boston surgeon Henry Cushing and his remarkable matchmaking wife Gogsie, the 3 sisters, Minnie Betsey and Babe, would become Mrs Roosevelt, Mrs Fosburgh, Mrs Astor, Mrs Whitney, Mrs Mortimer and Mrs Paley. Diana Vreeland noted ‘There was a moment when they were extraordinary’ After her first husband Uber-WASP Stanley Mortimer, ‘as chiseled as a Greek God’, returned a changed man from service in the Pacific, Babe wed William S. Paley. A broadcasting titan, Bill faced bigotry because he was Jewish - barred from the Metropolitan and Bar Harbor Clubs because of the faith of his forebears. He was always in awe of his brother-in-law Jock Whitney. But, as one observer quipped ‘ If living well is truly the best revenge, the Paleys’ thirst for retribution must have been positively Biblical’ Bill showered his Babe with sables and jewels but he expected perfection in return. ‘He wanted a wife without peer to show how successful he was.’ An abiding image of her was Babe ‘emerging from a cloud of cigarette smoke like a Space Age oracle of Delphi’. She succumbed to cancer on 6 July 1978, the day after her 63rd birthday. Her eulogy recalled her as ‘a beacon of perfection in this era of casual convenience.’ HorstPHorst #cushingsisters #manhattan #americanwomen #styleicon #newyorker #theswans #capote #babepaley

At one of the longest running surf contests in the world, fun is the name of the game, facilitated by the mandated equipment: boards 10 feet or longer. ⁣ ⁣ The surfing that’s most often depicted in pop culture—the tight turns and tricks of Blue Crush, and Point Break—is done on a shortboard, and it’s the style that spread around the world when surfing became known as an international sport. But starting in the late 90s, and especially lately, traditional longboarding has found new footing. As longboarding grows in popularity around the world, the women of Hawaii define the meaning of the sport. ⁣ ⁣From Waikiki to the North Shore, women are in the lineup, and their presence invites new potential. Even for those who have yet to make it into the waves, longboarding has found broad appeal as a lifestyle on Instagram, where some athletes have six-figure followings.(The most popular women longboarders hang out with a set of equally talented women surf photographers and videographers who ensure fans’ feeds are always filled with stunning aqua-blue imagery.)
