The bleeding mycena (#Mycenahaematopus, meaning roughly 'bloody foot'), is so named for the dark, staining latex that leaks from its skinny stems and fragile gills when damaged. This is the only mycena to 'bleed' a colored latex. The #bleedingmycena is 'weakly' #bioluminescent in both fruit body and mycelium- but like, SUPER weak. Something like 20 hours of exposure to x-ray film to see evidence of bioluminescence (so dont go out staring at them trying to see a glow- you probably won't! But if you do- call Professor X, he will have a bed for you). The bioluminescence is caused by the oxidation of a pigment called luciferin This #mycena contains compounds previously known only to exist in aquatic sponges, which show promise for cytotoxicity (tumor killing), and #antimicrobial/#antibacterial activities. Sulfur dioxide is a colourless gas that has a sharp, nasty smell . It can be used as a preservative for dried fruits, such as figs and apricots, due to its antimicrobial properties.
