NAAM MEIN KYA RAKHAI HAI...! . . We liked short names, easy to spell and pronounce, 3-5 syllable long. . . We both are Filmmakers. We have a slight hunch that our baby was conceived when we were out on a shoot Filmmakers are often called warriors of light! And when we looked at our baby for the first time, this name from our list kept coming back to us. So, we went ahead and named her Noor . . Nūr is an Arabic unisex name which means ‘the light’ and is often used to make compound names like Noorjahan, Gurnoor, Nuri, Nurullah etc. The name Noor and it’s meaning reverberated well and appealed to our senses immensely . . Little did i know that in Indian culture, the baby's arrival sparks a quest for perfect baby name amongst the grandparents and relatives. We faced a lot of flak about choosing a ‘Muslim’ name and then about the fact the baby’s bua (hubby’s sister) has the right to name the baby. We faced resistance to change her name. In-laws refused to address our baby with the name we had chosen. They had called her Pari . . As a new mom, this agitated me no end. I had read somewhere that the names we tend of choose also shape the personality and beliefs of our children. I had no problem with the name Pari, but for my child, I wanted a name that went beyond the confines of religion and language, that could propel her to bring light amongst her people as she grows . . We were steadfast. We were supported by my secular parents who went ahead and got prayers done in different religions for her homecoming (that’s a post for another day). It took my in-laws 3 months to get on-board . . My mother found the mention of Noor in a book describing the various names of #Allah (see pic) . . We get compliments when people hear her name. The Bollywood film ‘Noor’ also helped i guess. Though sometimes we do come across strangers and known folks who find it weird or get uncomfortable.
