#Repost @thefemaledoc ・・・ While this mug makes me laugh, it also reminds me of how far I’ve come as a physician. Whilst a burned out intern, google searches and print outs made my blood boil. How could I possibly spare another moment to explain why their search was wrong and I was right. However now I view it as an opportunity to connect and really understand a grieving family member. Many are grasping at straws to simply feel more in control of their loved ones demise, and sometimes all it takes from me is a “thank you for the discussion” and “I promise I’m doing everything I can.” #empathy What do you do in these situations? July 1 means it’s the start of the academic year and I am going back to training :) After 2 years of enjoying the #attendinglife I’m definitely going to miss the autonomy, flexibility and let’s be real-paycheck. But I love the hierarchy of medicine, learning from experts in the field and the camaraderie between those in the trenches with you. Excited for this next step in my career and to have baby P along with me ‍⚕️#29weeks . . . . #29weekspregnant #bump #bumpstyle #maternityfashion #hemeonc #fellowship #fellowshiptraining #premed #medstudent #resident #residency #womeninmedicine

Finished my last official shift as an attending before training begins again for the next 3 years. Working as a hospitalist at one of the largest cancer centers in the world at night and conducting translational research with some of the most brilliant minds in molecular biology, epidemiology, and bioinformatics during the day was an experience I will always cherish and use in my practice going forward. I learned so much over the past two years and witnessed the resiliency of patients and their families as they bravely fought against a diagnosis we still don’t have a cure for. I took care of 98 year olds and 19 year olds, patients from Colombia and from China, some were movie stars and some were homeless, there were those who had smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day and those who had never touched one, they were black white brown - it didn’t matter, cancer affected them all. Most days (like the one pictured here) were emotionally taxing. I cried every single time a patient or their family member expressed gratitude after I delivered bad news- even in some of their darkest moments they were able to extend a kindness towards me. Other days I couldn’t wait to form the relationship patients had with their oncologist, to celebrate the successes along the way, to develop new treatment strategies when the old therapies no longer worked and most importantly, to provide comfort and dignity throughout it all. As I move forward with hematology/oncology fellowship next week, these are the moments I hold on to, grateful for all of the people that brought me here. . . . #premed #medstudent #medicine #cancer #cancersucks #attendinglife #fellowship #fellowshiptraining #oncology #cancerresearch

Growing up, I was never considered to be “talented”. In the Filipino culture, you weren’t talented unless you could sing, dance, or entertain a crowd. I couldn’t do any of that, and I felt like a huge disappointment to my family. But I did study really hard. And I worked my butt off to accomplish my goals. Spent years in isolation with my head buried in books. But with all that hard work came some amazing opportunities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last week I had the honor of speaking at POPSUGAR Playground in NYC, the largest female-led festival in the world @popsugarplayground The entire time, I was referred to as “talent” — something I’ve never heard myself called before. POPSUGAR put my face on their website and app. There was a media team that took my pictures. I got to sit in a makeup chair. I mingled with fitness celebrities. I had the opportunity to speak to an audience about wellness and living a life with purpose. I was even in the same green room as @chrissyteigen, @issarae, @mandymooremm, @toneitup founders, and other very influential female figures. It was completely SURREAL and absolutely EMPOWERING. This kind of stuff NEVER happens to me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My entire life, I struggled and worked hard in the shadows. But that weekend I felt like Cinderella finally attending the ball. Proof that you can turn your strengths into your talent. 2 month anniversary of being an anesthesiologist, it’s been exciting, challenging and definitely a huge learning curve. Happy New Year!!! I’ve spent my first six months as an Anesthesiologist focusing on providing outstanding patient care. 2018 was a huge year since I finished residency and passed Part 1 of my Anesthesiology Board exam. This year I look forward to providing more content about this amazing and mysterious medical specialty. -your friendly neighborhood Anesthesiologist . . . . . . . . #doctor #physician #doctorlife #premed #medschool #medstudent #residency #residentlife #fellowship #attendinglife #hospital #MCAT #USMLE #meded #anesthesia #anesthesiology #operatingroom #criticalcare #ICU #criticalcare #intensivecare #blackdoctors #blackexcellence

I remember the first time I was on emergency angioplasty call as a fresh new attending 5 years ago. It was the middle of the night about 3am when a 65 year old lady came in with crushing chest pain and ST elevations with a BP of 60 mm Hg screaming “I don’t want to die”. I won’t lie - I was scared shitless. The only thing between this lady living and dying was me - a brand new attending. I was stressed, sweating, but stayed focused. The access was tough, the wiring was tough, and the patient was unstable throughout. Nevertheless with the help of my great fellow and experienced cath lab staff we got the case done 2 hours later - and she did great. . . Fast forward to today, after being in those hairy situations numerous times, I find myself cool, comfortable and ready for whatever challenge or complication that arises. The same case today would probably take me 45 min, I would let my fellow do most of it, and we’d crack jokes and do some teaching along the way. . . Nothing can replace experience, both for one’s skillset and mindset. We are constantly learning and refining ourselves. It is not till you become an attending flying solo when the “AP classes” begin. That’s when you grow to perfect your craft. As many of you move on to your next chapter remember to stay humble, know your limits, have humility, and listen to those around you. You still have a ways to go.

Booked a weekend getaway and my last trip before fellowship begins this week sooo that means I also picked up moonlighting shifts last night and tonight Typically after your first year of residency you can begin to moonlight. When the hospital is understaffed they will offer shifts for moonlighting. I never took advantage of it as a resident because we already worked so much and you had to comply with duty hour regulations, but over the last 2 years my moonlighting shifts have made me feel a little less guilty about any excessive purchase or spontaneous travel. I know in medicine we always talk about the years of not earning while we are in school, or the student debt burden we face for years, the extra hours of work we put in without pay- but one of the highlights for me has been moonlighting and I know many people who have paid off debt, put down payments on mortgages, or like me use it for the “extra” things in life because of it. Although it’s not easy, these are shifts no one else wants usually so you are giving up your weekend, your holiday or your night with hubby and putting in hours on top of your full time job, but if working a little harder means you get to play a little harder I’m all for it #workhardplayhard

Yesterday I spoke with some of the @amwadoctors students at @westernu_comp and it reminded me of when I was wait listed at that same school and didn’t get in. In fact, one of the counselors told me my research wasn’t “real” research because it was based in behavioral sciences and not bench work. I think about all the struggles I had as a pre-med student and the gut wrenching severe disappointment of not feeling good enough for medical school... but look at me now. I'm a professor of medicine at a medical school that once rejected me as a lackluster pre-med with a mediocre GPA and crappy MCAT score. Remember you can be told NO a thousand times, but you only need 1 YES to make your dreams come true! A very special shout out to anyone struggling with MCATs and their application! I’ll be teaching my 5 core hacks to get into medical school via free live webinar! Hit the webinar link in my bio if this message resonates with you!
