The medical term for autism is ‘autism spectrum disorder’, and just like it sounds, autism is not linear with ‘super bad’ at one end and ‘not so autistic’ at the other. Everyone has a range of difficulties and deficits, and things that they are better at. Some people cannot speak aloud well or at all, but are eloquent when using written form. Some people struggle with knowing when to use the bathroom but can focus for hours on a chosen subject or task. In some places, ‘levels’ are given to someone who has been diagnosed as autistic, meant to show how ‘bad’ the autism is, and how much it may hold the person back in life, but this is being moved away from because it is holding people back from their full potential when they are continually presumed to be not competent; and for those deemed to be mildly affected by autism, they are often not given the accommodations they need to exist in this neurotypical world as well as they could do with the accommodations in place. So whatever the diagnosis; please presume competence, provide opportunity, but also treat them as autistic and as such provide accommodations and understanding of different ways of communicating. . .
