Planning trips in late Feb/early March are tricky. We had to adjust plans a few times due to weather and permits. Landed on a 12 mile paddle through the Black Canyon, down the Colorado River...making stops along the way to explore and soak in 4 different hot springs, then camped on the beach with an impressive fire, post an under the stars soak adventure. Not sure how I’m going to go back to a life that doesn’t include a daily nature soak ‍♀️ @becky.schreiber wins the trip saver award for coming up with plan F that was an A+ adventure and thankful for @kkurc for doing all the hard work of steering the canoe

The Man. And one of the nicest climbers around, Jimmie Dunn, on Eighth Voyage in the Black Canyon, Colorado. Circa 1980. @jborof is working on a Black story for an upcoming Zine, and quotes the “rope, rack, and shirt on your back” mantra of Dunn and company so I reached out to Jimmie for some photos and this is one he sent over. So stylish, although he was just doing his thing. We are just doing our thing over here at The Zine and we are psyched to represent the essence of climbing. One of the final pitches before that glorious moment when you get to take off your harness and take in that epic view of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Last weekend @daveallfrey and I took the new inflatable portaledges from @grade7equipment into the #blackcanyon and made a two day free ascent of the Air Guitar, a 17 pitch sustained 12+ on the North Chasm View Wall. It’s a route I had tried twice and failed on both times in a day effort. Inspiration to climb this way in the Black was pulled from an epiphany that I had in Patagonia this winter, that I would need to acquire more wall skills if I wanted to pursue the line of real inspiration in Patagonia next year. The inflatable ledge, may just be the answer. Check out my story if you are interested. When we got to this overlook we spotted a group of turkey vultures hanging out and as they took flight we also noticed there was a faint rainbow at the end of the canyon! It was a really cool moment I won’t soon forget!

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of these remote national parks that doesn’t see as much traffic as a lot of others, which is kind of surprising given that it is quite stunning. The Painted Wall, seen on the opposite side of the canyon with the crisscrossing dikes, is 2,700 feet (823 m) tall making it the third largest sheer wall in the lower 48 after El Cap and Notch Peak. The Black is serious business all the way around. Climbing here is very committing and descending into the canyon by any route is intimidating.
