Living in your truth is scary but exciting and so rewarding! I feel blessed that I wake up everyday and make beautiful things for a living. I play in the desert and run down trails for inspiration and the sun gives me energy. I wasn’t always met with support when wanting to be an artist and definitely got a lot of funny looks when I tell my family I spend a lot of my free time wandering in the wild and sleeping outside! I’ve gone on 100s of hikes in the White Mtns and I’ve always been the only Black person in any group of friends or organized group. So it was the purest and deepest of delights to gather a group of five BIPOC friends (and two white friends who deferred to our centering) for a weekend of hut backpacking. Thank you beloved friends for this unique joy and a day I kinda thought would never come.

“Took Lai to see the tallest trees in eastern North America today. Other than meeting a pack of wild dogs on a trail, it was a magical experience. The trees exhibited such peace and wisdom. It was raining and that truly added to ambience of this national park. We walked a few miles and then we all enjoyed some cantaloupe underneath these massive beauties. Also, to anyone following along, we have a goal to take Lailah to as much state and national parks as we can throughout our lifetime. “Fun fact: I was absolutely TERRIFIED to take this picture! I have an extreme fear of heights, but I was determined to face my fears and catch a view of mother nature ‍♀️ • • Fear has been a never-ending theme in my journey. Can you relate? ‍♀️We all experience fear at some point in our lives. That's one of my many quirks. I often let fear get in the way of experiencing life's richest moments. The simple fact is we experience fear because we're afraid to fail. Fear is an indifference to failure. Sometimes I even run to my fears to protect my ego. Now.. I KNOW I just spoke to somebody! ☕ My thinking is if I go full force towards my aspirations and they happen not to work out, that must mean i'm no good ‍♀️ So let's pull the fear card to play small and not have to endure the pain of failure. (Hmm, sound familiar?) But what good is that? Is it not worth it to us to experience the beauty and treasures that life's surprises have to offer us? • We're going to fail sometimes, that's inevitable. But when we try to protect ourselves from failure we hinder ourselves from growing into our greatest and most truest versions of ourselves! As opposing as it sounds, I'm making the effort to lean into fear instead of resisting it. I'm finding when I lean into fear, I change my relationship with failure. I decide to make the choice to use fear as compass for action and growth rather than to play small and be inactive. • How does that saying go?
