We “caught” some color during art play this morning after reading the book, “Swatch, The Girl Who Loved Color”! They started with watercolor and then stamped black tempera paint to catch the color. • • I think it was @thecreativenative_ who shared a pic of kiddos using jar lids to stamp tempera paint and I loved it so much! Reading: Who’s in the Forest? Written by Phillis Gershator; Illustrated by @missjillmcdonald; Published by @barefootbooks “Who’s hiding in the forest, dark and deep? Foxes on the prowl-creep, creep, creep.” My boys always request read alouds from this series of “who’s hiding” books. The rhymes and repetitive text make it easy for them to participate in reading and the darling illustrations make it a favorite! Creating: Inspired by Jill McDonald’s cut paper collage style, we used paper punchers and paint color samples to create some forest leaves and creatures. Paper punching is a wonderful way for littles to use their creativity and also work on hand strengthening!

A look back at #mymonthmaking... It seems April was all about the details! I took my time on my Egg Hunt eggs and Rose pegs, from “My Heart Is a Compass”—both part of my #librarypegdolls collection. At the last minute I finally had an idea for an Easter peg doll, which allowed me to incorporate felt for the first time! I loved working on The Earth Book peg dolls—such a fun style! Rounding out the month were two more Pete The Cat characters and Sam I Am pegs (on a smaller peg—2in vs the 3in I painted in March). I’m already working hard on my May projects! Fingers crossed that a few trips won’t slow me down! .. .. Library Collection: My Heart Is A Compass, by Deborah Marcero. .. .. Our librarians featured this book in February. I love the symbolism of compasses as guidance, whether you’re following an external source, or your inner North Star. The book is about a little girl, Rose, who uses her heart and imagination to guide her on a beautiful journey. She creates her own maps and her own adventure! (And Rose’s maps are really cool!) .. .. I bought my own copy before I ever left the library and also intend to give it as a gift later this year. So I made a Christmas ornament peg doll to give to the library, two smaller peg dolls to be given with the book, and of course one for myself (that features several of Rose’s personal items)! Happy Earth Day!!! .. .. Library Collection: April. Todd Parr’s “The Earth Book”! Parr is another favorite author of our librarians for the preschool age group. .. .. I didn’t expect to have so much fun painting this style! I choose one quote for the back of the library’s ornament and another quote from the book for the peggie we’re keeping. .. .. This was also the first pegdoll I used @daddycraftshop tip of scraping off errors with an exacto knife. So cathartic and addicting! Worked like a charm and I’ve used the method several times since. Library Collection: Easter special! I found the lift-the-flap book, “We’re Going on an Egg Hunt”, at the library. It was so cute, I bought the board book (no lift-flaps) for us and to give.
