Dragon Egg Carton Craft So we had to make a dragon to go with our dragons eggs didn’t we?! (See my precious post) In my bid to raise peace-loving thoughtful boys, we read The Reluctant Dragon about a dragon that doesn’t like to fight. Then the older boys painted two egg carton halves and Mr nearly 9 finished off the craft this afternoon. This week I taught a preschool lesson based all around one of my favorite picture books—The Day the Crayons Quit! The story is made up of a series of letters written to boy from his box of crayons that share the frustrations they’ve been experiencing. I’ve loved this book since it was first released because I felt an instant connection to my childhood self who made up personalities and families for my crayons/markers/pencils. Each of the kids in my preschool was a different color of crayon and we made crayon hats to correspond. Then they stood in the front while I read the letter for their crayon. We also made crayon people, did letter and number activities, read the sequel (which I also love!), and more! I did a shorter version of this lesson for a storytime playgroup with friends three years ago and it was fun to look back at pictures. My son (3 years ago) and my daughter (this year) picked the same color of crayon to be! Who else is a fan of these books?

Day 3 of @socialmums #challenge and today the subject is 'How I work' You will probably have an idea by now of how Story Craft sessions work and so I wanted to share with you some more of the behind the scenes stuff. So first things first I base all my sessions, parties and after school club on children's books to make reading fun and hopefully encourage a love of books. I am always looking out for new stories and so if you have any suggestions please let me know. I chose the book that my children enjoy have an obvious theme or play ideas. I live with my target audience and so where possible we try out some of my craft and play ideas together at home. I love the ideas my children come up These are some of craft ideas we had for The snail and the whale session this week which I did with my daughter. Decorating an old CD, drawing on coffee filters then making the colours run with water and finally the paper plate snail which I chose for pre school age children. Annabelle also painted a beautiful 'Snail and the Whale' picture ️ I would love to hear about some of the crafts that you make at home with your children I hope that gives you a bit more of an insight into what I do to create a Story Craft session ️

A look back at #mymonthmaking... It seems April was all about the details! I took my time on my Egg Hunt eggs and Rose pegs, from “My Heart Is a Compass”—both part of my #librarypegdolls collection. At the last minute I finally had an idea for an Easter peg doll, which allowed me to incorporate felt for the first time! I loved working on The Earth Book peg dolls—such a fun style! Rounding out the month were two more Pete The Cat characters and Sam I Am pegs (on a smaller peg—2in vs the 3in I painted in March). I’m already working hard on my May projects! Fingers crossed that a few trips won’t slow me down! .. .. Day 4 of @socialmums and today's theme is #branding It has been an exciting day in the world of Story Craft as today I held the FIRST Story Craft after school club at Springfield Primary School in Tilehurst, Berkshire ️ It is amazing to be able to extend Story Craft sessions into schools. The children really enjoyed their story today and all the book themed crafts and play that followed. Story Craft makes books fun and enjoyable. This is important as children who enjoy reading will be self motivated to read independently themselves throughout their lives. Books offer so much more than a good story. They are important for improving and expanding language skills, introducing new topics and world's, exercising imaginations and of course a good source for knowledge. It has been proven that children who enjoy reading do better at school and once you understand all the benefits of reading it is easy to see why ❤️❤️ #socialmumsjune

Library Collection: My Heart Is A Compass, by Deborah Marcero. .. .. Our librarians featured this book in February. I love the symbolism of compasses as guidance, whether you’re following an external source, or your inner North Star. The book is about a little girl, Rose, who uses her heart and imagination to guide her on a beautiful journey. She creates her own maps and her own adventure! (And Rose’s maps are really cool!) .. .. I bought my own copy before I ever left the library and also intend to give it as a gift later this year. So I made a Christmas ornament peg doll to give to the library, two smaller peg dolls to be given with the book, and of course one for myself (that features several of Rose’s personal items)!
