#Repost @inknic_science with @make_repost ・・・ 'Cranial Nerves': anatomy drawing by Nicholas Rajan (@nicks_dfg) made with @procreate. In picture: 12 pairs of cranial nerves. Description: Cranial nerves arise directly from the brain and supply the special sensory organs and general senses from the head and neck. The cranial nerves may be sensory or motor or of mixed type. There are 12 pairs, each designated with a Roman numeral, and some with exotic names: I – olfactory nerve, which is concerned with the perception of smell II – optic nerve, obviously the visual nerve III – oculomotor nerve, which moves the eyes IV – trochlear nerve, which also moves the eyes V – trigeminal nerve, which is concerned with sensations of face VI – abducens nerve, which also moves the eyes VII – facial nerve, responsible for facial expressions VIII – vestibulocochlear nerve, concerned with hearing and balance IX – glossopharyngeal nerve, receives taste sensations from the tongue X – vagus nerve, supplies the heart, lungs and intestines XI – accessory nerve, supplies some muscles of the back and neck XII – hypoglossal nerve, concerned with movements of the tongue. #artandscienc #medicalartist #biologymajor #science #neuro #brain #cranialnerves #brainscience #neurology #neuroscience #biology #scienceandart #anatomy #anatomyandphysiology #medical #medicalgraphics #anatomyandphysiology #humananatomy #humananatomyart #anatomyart @sketchingscience @thescientistfacts @neuroscienceneurology @the_brain_scientist @thespacegeologist

Redesign your mind, redesign your life. I wanted to break down something that's helped me understand how to change my beliefs, and ultimately my behaviors, for a better life. As much as we hear about eliminating limiting beliefs and reprogramming, we're not taught to understand how it works on a scientific level. To me, science is the language of spirituality. It's how we seek to understand what we cannot fully understand. The brain is a powerful and efficient instrument. It's constantly maximizing its potential (our potential) by designing patterns for thoughts, emotions, feelings, and behaviors that we often experience. Since we run these paths regularly, the brain doesn't want to "think" about them so it stores them in the memory we have reserved for our subconscious mind. It tucks them away, filed under unseen and unaware. Most of us have been roaming this planet for some time now so that mechanism has created a pretty large backlog. So big, that 95% of the way we're moving through this world is operating based on this automation. And honestly, that's a beautiful thing that can really free up the mind for welcoming in novelty, creativity, and presence. But, if that instrument is playing songs that no longer serve us, we need to bring it to our conscious awareness. Resurface it from the archives, have a close listen, and decide if we want to change the song or drop the whole genre entirely and try a new one. It's reverse engineering. That music was conscious at one point, it took some practice and repetition to perfect it, then it was moved to the background. Thinking to doing to being. It's our job to identify our thoughts, emotions, and feelings (being) by becoming a curious observer of how we’re behaving (doing) and bringing it back to our conscious awareness (thinking). Once it’s back to the starting point, we can redesign. Placing a new belief into our consciousness (thinking), then practicing and repeating it often (doing), until it becomes easy and effortless. Until it becomes a new way of being. A new version of ourselves. A new mind and a new life by our own design.

The importance of learning to understand and release yourself from your past is not just psychobabble. . It is rooted in the way that our brains work. When a therapist says “so tell me about your childhood?” they aren’t just being nosy or trying to dredge up old stuff unnecessarily. . The therapist understands that the experiences you had in the first 7 years of life are important to explore and bring into consciousness. . This is because your childhood is mostly lived unconsciously in a theta state (the state adults go into when hypnotized). . The child brain is downloading massive amounts of information in order to survive. The information is downloaded in the form of implicit memories (memories that guide the patterns in our lives with little awareness). . The child also takes things literally. They aren’t able to evaluate information, to understand that opinions are just opinions, or that what their parents do or say isn’t socially or relationally acceptable. They just download it for what it is - information that guides them to create their own sense of the themselves and the world. . That’s why even when a parent has a “logical reason” for being distant or critical the child will still develop attachment styles and self esteem issues that correlate with this. . The child isn’t able to say “my parent criticized my clothing because when they were little they were bullied and they’re trying to protect me.” The child instead internalizes that criticism to mean they are literally criticizable. . The child who’s parent goes to the hospital for a long period of time doesn’t say “I understand they were sick and had to leave me”. They just say “people leave me”. . Adults forget that children live with a child’s mind and not an adult mind. It’s important to remember that children do not take context into consideration or nuance. They just download information as it is. . So why, then, is it important to talk about your childhood? . Because when adults have an opportunity to create context and nuance around their childhood they release themselves from the child’s version of the story. And, this is a first step towards creating a secure mind.

In this optical illusion, the black dot in the center of your vision should always appear. But the black dots around it seem to appear and disappear. That’s because humans have pretty bad peripheral vision. If you focus on a word in the center of this line you’ll probably see it clearly. But if you try to read the words at either end without moving your eyes, they most likely look blurry. As a result, the brain has to make its best guess about what’s most likely to be going on in the fuzzy periphery and fill in the mental image accordingly.
