Without looking in the comments, how many Cru Villages are there in Beaujolais? No cheating - Most know #Beaujolais for its Nouveau style of wine which is often reminiscent of bananas and bubblegum. A thin light wine rushed through the winery to be released around the world on the 3rd Thursday of November. The commercialisation of Beaujolais began with the Nouveau trend in the 70s and 80s. _ In its peak nearly half of all Beaujolais AC was sold this way. The region was pumping out a ridiculous amount and as a result quality quickly dropped. _ Today #beaujolaisnouveau is a worn out fad wine that only remains a wine of interest in a few cities across France. Many consumers only know Beaujolais for its Nouveau styles and tend not to take this region too seriously. Beaujolais is a great region to look out for, offering excellent value for money, especially when it comes to their top tier cru wines. _ There are a few people responsible for this shift, most notably Jules Chavuet who is often named the godfather of the #naturalwine movement. A winemaker, gifted taster and research chemist who focused on yeast, carbonic maceration and Malo Lactic fermentation. Jules studied nature in order to know what was needed to work with it rather than against it. He spoke out against the use of chemicals in the #vineyard during a time when almost everyone was spraying or using additives in wine. Perhaps a traditionalist at heart who wanted to return to the old practises of #viticulture and vinification. He insisted on using old vines, no chemical sprays, harvesting late to obtain the ripest fruit, sorting tables to use only the healthiest grapes, minimal doses of sulphur dioxide and putting an end to chapitalisaiton. Si parte dalla città alle porte della #Borgogna, terra di buoni vini e si sale sulle colline del #Beaujolais, altrettanto famose per i prodotti dei vigneti, dove a dominare è il vitigno #gamay. Una tappa che poi sfiora #Lione per arrampicarsi sui Monts du Lyonnais e si avvicina a Saint-Étienne. Il capoluogo del dipartimento della #Loire, ex città mineraria, si è ora votato al #design e alla danza con le apprezzate Biennali. Ma questa è anche una tappa che corre a cavallo fra le valli dei fiumi #Rodano e Loira che in questa parte del loro tragitto corrono paralleli, ma in direzioni opposte. Il Rodano verso sud, la Loira verso nord. Pochi lo sanno, ma alla periferia di Saint-Étienne scorre proprio la Loira. A Saint-Victor-sur-Loire ci si può imbarcare per una breve crociera nelle Gorges de la Loire (foto) che qui scorre in gole profonde circondate da villaggi e castelli. Happy wine Wednesday! If you’ve been following me for a bit you’ll know I’ve been trying to hop across the pond to drink less California and drink more European wines, starting with France. The last wine I grabbed as a recommendation, this one I grabbed randomly for fun after browsing for way too long. I enjoy French wines, and I’m learning how to decipher the labels, but it’s a process! Thank goodness for sommeliers and wine experts at the store, and hopefully I’ll be full of all that wine knowledge one day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That brings us to #whatsinmyglass this week, which is the 2017 Domaine Chignard Julienas Beauvernay. For someone who’s still learning about French wine, initially reading everything on the label can be overwhelming, so it helps to break everything down piece by piece. Domaine Chignard is the producer, Beauvernay is the vineyard, and Julienas is the Appellation in which the wine is produced. This sub-region predominantly produces Gamay, with this being 100% Gamay. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This wine was full of bright red cherries and raspberries accompanied by minerality and supple tannins. This was such a fun bright expression, and definitely me expanding out of my comfort zone. I always want to reach for the things I know, but sometimes it just takes a leap into the unknown to learn more and discover new wines. I grabbed this bottle for $25 at @flatironwines and I’ll definitely be returning to explore more of France ✈️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you tried much French wine?
