Surrendering can be so hard. Especially when we have created the delusion we can and will always be in control. If you have challenges around trauma, grief or addictions, it can be so hard not to try to “just manage life enough” to convince yourself you have control over most things. And when this has been a coping mechanism for a long time, it can be super scary to try to let go of the reigns a little bit more. The only thing I’ve ever found, (for both myself and my clients) that alleviates additional suffering where pain already exists, is to surrender to what is. Sometimes surrendering to what is looks like the willingness to feel feelings we have longed stored away. Sometimes it looks like ceasing the attempts at trying to make others more of what you prefer them to be. Sometimes it looks like diving into the grief of someone’s sudden death. And other times, still, it looks like surrendering to the fact that your life is now good - and that you don’t have to live in the pain of the past any longer. Just for today, choose one thing in your life that you are fighting so hard to control. Breathe. Then let go just by a tiny bit.
