Native American history didn’t begin in 1492. . Most of our history is so Euro-centric and White-centric that sometimes we don’t even see it. If you have any texts that talk about Native Americans/American Indians/Indigenous people in the past tense, as if they no longer exist, that’s a problem. If you only teach about “tribes” but don’t get into the distinctions between the Comanche, the Cherokee, the Haudenosaunee, that’s a problem. If Native Americans only show up in your history books or stories as obstacles to Manifest Destiny, that is a huge problem. . And it’s hard, I know! We weren’t taught this way, so we have to re-educate ourselves. It takes so much time and effort. Three book recommendations I can suggest from my graduate school Native American Studies classes are: 1491 by Charles C. Mann Facing East from Indian Country by Daniel K. Richter The Comanche Empire by Pekka Hämäläinen . Today was my last day of summer break. The weather has been HORRIBLE the past two days (Very hot. Very humid. Lots of rain.) So, I figured why not head to school and get a head-start on my classroom. Printed all my syllabi and put up my "Why History Matters" bulletin board and reorganized a book shelf. (I spent way too much time excitedly explaining how I plan to use this bulletin board the second day of class to my teacher-neighbor across the hall who was also frantically trying to get her room in order before school starts! The next three days we have teacher inservice and the kids start after Labor Day!

When I was student teaching two years ago, my mentor teacher told me this period from Labor Day weekend through Thanksgiving is always the hardest time of year as a teacher. The routine of school becomes regular, zero days off, and countless meetings come at us. I always remind myself once we hit Thanksgiving break, there are a lot more breaks throughout the rest of the year so if I can make it through this patch, I’ve got this And I’m also choosing to look at the positive side to things — it’s going to be tough teaching the day after Halloween, BUT my admin canceled our after school staff meeting today

Edited to add: no, my students do not go to the bathroom during specials. This is the importance of discussing new things, not just implementing. They know it means “lining up for specials or on the way back” AKA transition time. I know the importance of specials and do NOT want my students missing out. It just didn’t fit on the card to write all of that. Does anyone else have students who need a little more support? Even in 4th grade, some of my students need reminders on when good bathroom times are, or some help staying organized. Target adhesive sleeves to the rescue! I simply put checklists in the sleeves to remind students and it’s been a huge help! #fosteringindependence

This is just year 4 for me, and I still consider myself a new teacher, but I am definitely now more on the veteran side of the topic on this poster. It is a VERY welcome change. I found this juicy breakup letter in my classroom written to K.G. from A.C! Of course the kids wanted me to read it out loud...so I did!! They also demanded to know whose it was. After all the guessing, I finally gave in and revealed that it was written to King George from American Colonists!! Always a fun way to introduce the Declaration of Independence - the biggest breakup letter in history! You’ve got to try this!!!
