For those of you who have been following me for a while you know how important I think the fundamentals are. For those of you who are new, the answer is VERY! . Performing the basic fundamentals of your discipline well is the key to injury prevention (my favorite) and skill acquisition (a more fun topic). A solid foundation is the key to your growth as an athlete and performer. . Ever watched a performer with hard skills but poor fundamentals? I never find it as enjoyable as a performer who makes it all look easy. The difference? Strong fundamentals. . And on that note... now that my online courses are officially launched and out in the world, it’s back to posts about the underlying #biomechanics and #movementfundamentals of circus arts! I hope you enjoy them. (Any burning questions? Comment below to inspire an upcoming post!) . . . . . #circuslife #thecircusdoc #circuspt #performingartsmedicine #circusstrong #aerialhoop #aerialstraps #trapeze #aerialsilks #anatomy #physicaltherapy #kinesiology #circusartist #aerialarts #aerials #aerialist #circus #physiotherapy #aerialanatomy #aerialist #aerialarts #trainsmart #trainhealthy #circusfitness #aerialstrong #appliedanatomy #polestrong #poledancefitness

This is a repost from over a year ago, but something I still talk about almost everyday as part of an aerial #movementassessment In my clinical practice ———— This is one example of how an aerialist May look if they are predominantly using their Lats to “engage” their shoulders when hanging. Look out for what appears to be a lack of shoulder range of motion, lumbar extension, and “closed” hips. . When hanging you *should* feel muscles working between your shoulder blades, in the center of your back, where your middle and lower trapezius attaches. You *should not* feel work down the sides of your body and into your lower back. . #goodformissafeform #aerialanatomy in practice . . Check out these knee hang muscles, and swipe to see a comparison of form! A knee hang with flexed hips is the most common error I see with beginning aerialists performing knee hangs (image on the right). In the hip-flexed position the novice #aerialist feels like they are "working hard" and therefore it must be more secure. But, in reality they are actually just working harder by co-contracting the hip flexors against the pull of the hamstrings and making the position less secure. ~ When you are hanging from your knees your hamstrings are the heros that flex your knees around the bar to support your body, but they don't work alone. Your gastrocnemius helps flex your knee and (bonus!) points your toes. ~ Your hamstrings attach on the pelvis and for them to work well you have to stabilize it against their pull. To do that you have two main options, you can co-contract your hip flexors to pull on the other side of the pelvis OR you can use your deep stabilizing abdominal #muscles to hold your pelvis still ~ Using the hip flexors means that your hamstrings are working in a lengthened position and have to pull harder to  both stabilize the pelvis AND flex the knee. But if you are able to use your core muscles your pelvis stays stable  your hamstrings are more easily able to bend your knee. To help the hamstring further, squeeze your glutes to assist them in extending your hips. ~ Pointing your toes, squeezing your glutes, and engaging your abs will give you a beautiful line for your knee hang, AND you will have a strong stable position that is ready to move into your next skill ~ Want to learn more about #aerialanatomy? Click the link to find the book! . Ever wonder why some artists can seem to learn new skills with ease? It is because their body speaks the language and has the ability to put the words together however they want. Soreness vs Pain . In aerial arts, muscle soreness is common as you learn new skills and gain strength on the way to your goals. Some of that #soreness is normal and is a sign of challenging your muscles. This normal soreness, which occurs about twenty-four hours after activity, is called DOMS: delayed onset muscle soreness. But, how do you know when you are sore from #training or you have an actual injury? Differentiating between #DOMS and #injury takes some #knowledge if you've never experienced it before. . This chart from my book Applied Anatomy of Aerial Arts, will help you recognize the difference. . . Want to learn more?
