My last pretty little egg from Tinkerbell before she moved to her new home As we’ve moved through the season, her eggs have got lighter and lighter. This one was barely green. It’s always so exciting when they go through their moult because that means a new laying season too!

Very exciting news!! Yesterday we found out we are going to be featured in @backyardpoultrymag latest issue! We will be in the “flocks to follow” section so so cool. Incase you didn’t know, ‘We’ means me (Charlie) and my 8 year old son Dylan. We live in the English countryside, and have a passion for chickens and coloured eggs. Sold these hatching eggs to a customer today My black copper marans hen, Lucille, (she lays the dark red/brown eggs) isn’t laying because of the extreme heat, so I’m not getting any of those pretty eggs. But I still get to collect these beauties!! Georgie lays the green eggs, which always have a funny, dark ring on the bottom. Every egg is different! I love getting to collect these beautiful, rainbow eggs every day

These little golden yolked jewels make all the hen-pecked peppers, dahlias, peas and potatoes worth it.... well, almost worth it. Most days Seriously though, there’s just something about that daily egg gather that I look forward to and which brings a sense of real gratitude and contentment to my heart. I love peaking into the laying boxes, filled with straw and patted down by 18 fluffy feathered butts into perfect circular nests. and finding either a drowsy hen doing her business or a clutch of colorful eggs that actually seem to glow in the dusty gloom of the coop. Reaching under the soft body of a friendly hen to gently lift out warm, fresh, fresh eggs also gives me a feeling of connection. Connection to all the other women who steal a few moments of peace inside their dusty coops, who silently revel in the feel of each silky smooth egg and swells with pride over the array of color, a splash of speckles, a particularly large or unusually small egg... I think of those hardy pioneer women and how they must have loved their flocks. How those eggs fed the folks who traveled ever westward, settling amidst an often (understandably) hostile Native population, and scratching out a homestead, a family, a life out of the wilderness. And then there’s me. A redheaded #offthegrid mountain mama with a child born every decade since I was 20. Living in a time of privilege, excess and plenty, where we get to choose to live off grid, closer to nature, raise our food and let our children run wild and free. Those pioneer women had no choice, and it was a hard, relentless, heartbreaking yet rewarding existence. It’s these eggs, those chickens and my ever-grateful heart that connects me to the fibrous web of hard-lovin women, both here, now and in the past, long forgotten...

Today’s star is this heavy bloomed olive/lavender egg in the center. Bloom is the protective coating that then hen covers the egg with just prior to laying. It seals the porous egg shell, protecting it from contamination. A heavy layer of bloom can change the color of the eggshell.
