Autism comes with communication differences. . . What are those differences? . . We tend to use the words we choose, our tone of voice, and body language in different ways than non-autistic people. It’s important to understand these differences so we can “translate”. . . About a month ago I was sitting in class feeling pretty dejected. Despite having similar interests, and being in the same program, my group had a tendency to physically block me out of the conversation. They didn’t seem to realize they were doing it, and I had no idea how to address the problem. . . I posed the question to the autistic community, and a friend explained “open and closed loop” conversation preferences. It really resonated, and I hope this explanation is as enlightening for you as it was for me in that moment. ♾✨ . . . The pile of irrelevant sticky notes has been cleaned off my desk. My secret stash of chocolate has been consumed. My paperwork is finished until the fall. When you crush your speech goals at your 1 month post cochlear implant activation evaluation this chick was a total rockstar yesterday surpassing current speech goals and moving on to speech expectations of 3+ year olds. I’m so proud of the energy she puts into speech sessions. With her second cochlear jmplant, her clarity has improved, she’s talking in full, complete sentences & she sings ALL day long.
