In 2013 visitors to Stamford's Hoyt-Barnum House were allowed in the home's attic for the first time. One person took a photo that seemed to show light in a dark corner and floating orbs. While there was no shortage of people who dismissed it as the work of a bad camera, others speculated that it may have been the spirit of an early inhabitant. Perhaps it was the family member who drowned nearby in 1755 or the ghost of 24-year-old Susannah Slasson Hoyt who died giving birth to her fourth child in 1707. The home was built in 1699 for 22-year-old blacksmith Samuel Hoyt and his bride, Susannah, who was then 17. The following year son Josiah was born, followed by daughters Abigail and Rebecca. Samuel named his fourth child in Susannah's memory. Nine months later on New Year's Eve, Samuel married Mary Scofield Weed, herself a widow of Jonas Weed, and a mother of four: John, Miles, Sarah, and Nathan. Their daughter Mary was born the following September, followed by siblings Samuel, Rachel, Jonathan, Nehemiah, and Martha. The home was cut and half and moved five miles from downtown Stamford to its location on High Ridge Road in 2016. It is maintained by the Stamford Historical Society and is the first moved home to regain landmark status.

Being so close the ground, your dog's body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Never leave your animals alone in the car- even with the windows open, a car can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop, which is potentially fatal. ⚡️KNOW THE SYMPTOMS: the symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, seizures, and an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. Animals with flat faces, like pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible. WHAT TO DO: If you suspect your pet is overheating, get them out of the heat immediately and give them access to water to drink. Do NOT douse them with cold water as this could send them into shock and be life threatening.
