Anything in a prone base position is hard work. Pelvis and spine compensations are usually out of control. It takes huge mental control to resist the urge to cheat. As always we care more about the quality of stability than the amount of movement in the moving part.
Here we demo hip extension lift offs and the lower part of the swimmers hovers.

Stand tall, core on, long back of the neck & chin anchored down. Breathe. Options:
1️⃣ shoulder blades & elbows press back
2️⃣ + hands lift off
3️⃣ + hinge out
4️⃣ + external axial rotations
5️⃣ + end range rotational training
Mix it up or do 10 of your favourite.

⭐️ ESSENTIAL PRO TIP⭐️
When we open our shoulders the cheats are to flare the front ribs and crush the back ribs. To prevent this:
when you breathe IN ➡️ expand your back ribs. when you breathe OUT ➡️ Engage your core and keep your front ribs from flaring. Back ribs and front ribs should always be level.

Not only is this amazing for your body but it has powerful effects on your mind. 2 minutes of OPENING will ⬇️ your cortisol levels ( stress hormone) and ⬆️ your testosterone levels ( confidence hormone ). UNWIND what you are WINDING UP all day.
1️⃣- swimmers with some ERRT ( end range rotational training)
2️⃣- swimmers from the top. Just like a push press, sometimes you get better mechanics if you focus on the down part.

Taking the 2nd year UBC masters of physiotherapy students through a science based mobility kinstretch class. I think they liked it a bit too much!
Great to work with this group of keeners and take their knowledge of science and apply it to rehab and performance. I think they got the message that our obsessive persist of passive stretching does not yield long term mobility gains...but FRC principles and techniques do. Science is essential.

How is your shoulder extension?

Most of us never reach back. If you don’t extend your shoulder you will begin to loose the ability to do so. That is the Principle of progressive adaptation. YOUR BODY IS CONSTANTLY ADAPTING. You get to decide what it adapts to. Your desk? Your phone?

In class we made a point of spending at least 2 MINUTES in shoulder extension. If you want to create biological change you need time. Time under tension.
