“Being born in a very traditional Islamic society in Indonesia, I thought I would be kicked out from home by my family that has been running an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) for more than 40 years. When I came out, my parents, who are Islamic public figures, shockingly accepted me as I really am. They are the reasons I started believing in Islam as the religion with empathy and limitless love and support for all human beings, including queer people. My parents’ unconditional love has helped me reconcile my faith with with my queer pride. “I am India’s first trans man pilot. I am a person who was rejected by my family for my identity. I grew up as a trans man in an extremely difficult, transphobic family environment. I was in Johannesburg studying to be a pilot when my parents found out that I was trans. As I returned to India, my orthodox Muslim family put me under house arrest. At 19, I had to run away from my home to escape the frequent physical and mental abuse by my family. I was lucky I found myself a job at an aviation academy in Kochi. I still face many challenges at my work place. People in Kerala are largely ignorant of transgender issues even though the state is hailed as a trans-friendly state. I want to continue to work hard and create a peaceful tomorrow for all trans and queer persons from all over India. I don’t want them to struggle as I did. For me, transgender visibility is hugely important. I believe it is revolutionary to choose to be seen and be visible in a world that tells us we should not exist. “I was never interested in becoming a fashion model. I only aspired to be a role model. I have accepted offers from magazines because I want transgender people to gain visibility and for the fashion industry to become more inclusive in Pakistan. It took me months to accept my first modelling offer. I was wary of being exploited and scared for my safety. After what happened to Qandeel Baloch, security is a real concern for anyone pushing the boundaries in a very visible way. I am happy that my work has paved the way for others. Today, we’re seeing more and more transgender people getting cast in films and appearing on television. But what I am most proud of is my work as an activist and with HIV-Aids patients. There I served as a bridge between the clinic and the community and became stronger in the process. “I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. My parents were foreign workers there. I grew up in a religious household where Islam was given a prominent and central place in our home and in our hearts. My relationship with Islam is a strong and beautiful one: it was my source of resistance, resilience and survival in the ultra conservative and capitalist Arab supremacist Kingdom. Due to the censorship of media and education, I sought my queer education online and through community. Often, these were non-western queer identities and genders. My best friend at school, Robbie, was also transmasculine. We never "came out" in the way the western colonising queer narrative suggests. Instead, it was just understood. And if it wasn't for Robbie and my trust in Allah that one day things will get better, I wouldn't be who I am today. I also want to acknowledge the privileges I had and have. I want to acknowledge that those better days were also the result of great sacrifices and struggles of martyrs and hereos. My goal is to deepen my connection with Allah, family, culture, community and my dearest. If I were to name one these actions of devotion & resistance: perhaps it is to be present and accessible to other queer Muslims. "my whole life i was taught that people like me were disgusting, wrong, and to be ridiculed. i grew up a scared lonely butch, in total isolation, certain i could never be who i was. when i finally went through a period of deep self-reflection and came out to myself as trans, i was immobilized by fear. the pure terror of feeling like no one will ever understand me, like no one will ever love me, completely consumed me. i couldn't do anything. it is only because of my close relationship with God that i allowed myself to realize that i deserve to live, and more importantly, that i deserve to be who i am. i am so proud of who i have become: a trans Iranian Muslim queer kid. i have learned the most valuable lesson by exploring my queerness and transness - no one can take my experiences away from me and no one can take my God away from me."
