Most Americans know about the Boston Tea Party, but there was another act of defiance in the colonies that has been largely lost to history. In July of 1776, after a reading of the newly written Declaration of Independence, 40 American troops toppled a gilded statue of King George III atop a horse that had stood in Bowling Green Park in Lower Manhattan. The crowd then hacked the two-ton statue to pieces. Those chunks were loaded onto a boat for a trip to a Connecticut foundry. Once there they were turned into 42,088 bullets, dubbed "melted majesty." While that's an impressive number of bullets, it falls far short of what the statue's volume should have yielded. It's thought that while those who transported the cargo stopped at the Raymond Clapp Tavern in Wilton, local Loyalists made off with some of the pieces. They may have hidden them in places nearby like Davis Swamp, on land owned by Samuel Belden, who supported the crown. Fast forward almost 200 years later when the Belden home was owned by Fred Favorite and Robert Devoye. The two learned from a newspaper story that local antiques dealer and treasure hunter Louis Miller had sold a piece of the statue he had found in the swamp on their land to a New York museum. Along with landowner Canio Carlucci, they sued for trespassing and theft. In a case that reversed decades of legal precedent referred to as "finders keepers," Miller was ordered to hand over his payment. The owners allowed the museum to keep the piece. Ironically the statue was created by a British sculptor named Robert Wilton. My latest story features details about its re-creation.
