This was shot on Canon C200. I hear from people all the time that no matter what I do, my footage doesn’t look as good as the movies. Just remember, there is a lot that goes into filmmaking. Team work is the dream work. As a colorist, I am as good as my DP. If someone gives me this caliber of footage then I don’t care if it’s shot with the Alexa Mini or Canon C200. I am going to bring my A-game and do my best to produce the most EPIC looking image possible. . . If you are just starting out my advice is to focus on Color Correction and not Color Grading. I shot this campaign with the OG Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5k. When it came to colors and flexibility in post, I couldn’t be more happier with the performance but unfortunately the micro 4/3 sensor made it impossible to get that “Cinematic” look. . . Most of the magic had to be done in post. I started with my primaries to dial the main characteristics of the look. Then I moved on with my secondaries for micro adjustments and extracting the true look DNA from “The Ring”. Once I nailed the color palette I started adding a ton of OFX to enhance the image. . . 1.I started by using the Tilt shift OFX to add shallow depth of field to create the cinematic look we were lacking. . 2.Then I added the Light rays OFX to create a light shaft to create visual interest. . 3.I applied the Flicker OFX to accentuate the horror. . 4.I added a cone shaped window to control light and create a torture cell vibe with the overhead light. . 5.I brought it all home with some extra special sharpening, grain, and chef’s special global adjustment. . .
