An unassuming footpath, Framfield Number Nine had no pretensions of being anything other than a simple thoroughfare. Then, in 1989, the path became the battleground in a landmark fight to protect & strengthen walkers’ rights. . In 1985, Hoogstraten purchased land on High Cross Estate near Uckfield, Sussex to construct the neoclassical Hamilton Palace. This grandiose mansion would be larger than Buckingham Palace and cost over £40 million to build. It would be the most expensive private house built in Britain for a century. The Palace was never finished - it sits, according to local residents, ‘crumbling’ . Designed as a mausoleum to hold his body for 5,000 years, Hoogstraten was somewhat irritated to find out that the Framfield Nine Footpath crossed the grounds. . A barn was constructed to block the path. The council refused to do anything about the obstruction. So @ramblersGB , @kate.ashbrook & @openspacessociety took up the fight. . Hoogstraten fought back - calling the ramblers ‘…scavengers. The absolute scum of the earth.’ …a bunch of the dirty mac brigade.’ & ‘The great unwashed … disgusting creatures.’ . The path then found itself at the centre of a landmark legal battle and would finally be reopened in 2003. The hard fought battle influenced two acts of Parliament and helped to strengthen walkers’ rights. . Back Squats! set yourself up with your hands as close to your shoulders as your mobility will allow. If you have to go really wide, work on your mobility, don’t just accept it! position the bar on the shelf of muscle at the top of your back, not on your neck - the bar shouldn’t be sitting on bone. turn your knuckles so they point upwards so you get flat wrists - avoid that broken wrist position- it is less solid. pull the bar down hard on your shoulders and squeeze your elbows together. This way the bar will be anchored to you, it will feel part of you - it’s easier to keep steady, you will feel more confident and therefore lift heavier so you will get stronger! make sure your feet are parallel - a small turnout of your toes is acceptable but if they point out a lot, you may have lazy glutes! Address that shit, don’t ignore it! position your feet as wide as you can while still being able to break parallel at the bottom of the squat. BRACE! Squeeze your heels together without moving your feet. This will tighten your thighs and activate your glutes. Take a deep breath in before you brace your abs, then brace your abs as if you were about to be punched in the stomach. Hold your breath for the entirety of the movement and stay braced throughout. squeeze your heels hard as you drive up, pressing your heels into the floor. Snap your glutes tight at the top, locking out your hips. Don’t fake it! The tighter you are, the lighter the bar will feel and the easier it will be to stand up - I promise!

Front scale: ⚖️Arms out to the side, keep your torso vertical. ⚖️squeeze your bum and tuck your hips under before you start in order to engage your core and hip flexors. ⚖️Point your toes - make it look pretty. ⚖️Create tension everywhere but don’t forget to breathe. Back scale: ⚖️Arms out to the side and push torso parallel to the floor while lifting one leg up behind you ⚖️keeping your legs straight, point your toes and raise your back leg as high as you can without pushing your shoulders lower. ⚖️keep tension everywhere. Don’t forget to breathe. L-sit start by depressing your shoulders - use your lats to keep them back and down - try not to shrug. then tuck your hips under - this will engage your core and hip flexors and stop you getting cramp in your quads. lift your legs as high as you can - to horizontal or higher. point your toes and make it look pretty. if you can’t get your legs up, do it with bent knees but try to get your hips forwards of your hands. keep working on these - they are really hard but every time you do them, do them for a little longer and a little better and they will improve. Stronger hip flexors will help your toes to bar for starters. Stronger, more balanced hips helps everything. a stronger core helps everything. be super aware of every bit of you while you are doing these as a lot of this is to do with motor control and being able to feel which muscles need to do what, not just strength.
