Try as I did, my 20 minute guided tour of the interiors was too short for me to successfully capture the absolutely mesmerizing quality of the light filtering in through the louvers. Detail of the openable louvres that form the outer skin of both the rooms and the corridors at "Golconde", Pondicherry. Made of asbestos reinforced concrete with beautiful brass locking mechanisms. The architects had the foresight to cast 30 percent extra louvers, so that any replacements for future breakages would also have aged exactly the same. VIBE | A serene scene at Golconde in Pondicherry. An extraordinary guest house completed in 1942, Golconde was designed by Raymond Antonin, George Nakashima and Francois Sammer and commissioned by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. It introduced modern architecture in India with a strong Japanese influence. Built at an angle to cut down the Western sun and entirely out of reinforced concrete, its innovative design provides natural ventilation in overwhelming heat and humidity.
